but almost every font you can get hold of _does_ have a dotless-i
glyph. it's the dotless-j that's difficult to find. knuth was
originally writing a _long_ time ago, when adobe was a mere start-up.
things have changed out of all recognition, since.

ages ago, i wrote a first stab at a latex compatible text font
handling module for musictex, and offered it to daniel, in private
mail. he wasn't interested, and i wouldn't be surprised to learn it
would now need a complete rewrite (even if i hadn't since lost it).
the musictex examples i use in latex documents have fudges all over
the place: i don't use musixtex in that context.
