?!?!

Please see the appended PMX source, which has both PMX 2.413 default
positioning and PMX's approximation of Read's rules for this example. The
latter set is implemented by using "Ao" on every main note. "Ao" causes
accidentals to be placed in the order that the chord notes are entered. In
the Read examples, I didn't do any other tweaking at all. So while the order
of placement is the same, there are still a few differences between PMX's
approximation of Read's rules and Christian's post, especially when Read
goes for the vertical stacking on the closest pair while PMX may push one of
the two further to the right in cases where some noteheads are left-shifted.

Aside from that, the main differences appear to be
1. Shorter 3-accidental cases where Read goes top-bottom-middle and PMX
cascades down;
2. PMX's initial placement of a single accidental is closer to the notehead
(but that's the MusiXTeX default, folks).

All in all there are many cases where PMX left alone does get Read's result,
and frankly in bar 9 I like PMX's choice better. However, I would be willing
to implement a special rule for 3-accidental cases (and make it the
default), if people agree. That would be fairly straightforward; but the
rest would take a huge amount of trial and error to generalize.

BTW, it looks like Read's book in paperback can be had for as little as
$10.00 (used) from Amazon.com.
