?!?! Please see the appended PMX source, which has both PMX 2.413 default positioning and PMX's approximation of Read's rules for this example. The latter set is implemented by using "Ao" on every main note. "Ao" causes accidentals to be placed in the order that the chord notes are entered. In the Read examples, I didn't do any other tweaking at all. So while the order of placement is the same, there are still a few differences between PMX's approximation of Read's rules and Christian's post, especially when Read goes for the vertical stacking on the closest pair while PMX may push one of the two further to the right in cases where some noteheads are left-shifted. Aside from that, the main differences appear to be 1. Shorter 3-accidental cases where Read goes top-bottom-middle and PMX cascades down; 2. PMX's initial placement of a single accidental is closer to the notehead (but that's the MusiXTeX default, folks). All in all there are many cases where PMX left alone does get Read's result, and frankly in bar 9 I like PMX's choice better. However, I would be willing to implement a special rule for 3-accidental cases (and make it the default), if people agree. That would be fairly straightforward; but the rest would take a huge amount of trial and error to generalize. BTW, it looks like Read's book in paperback can be had for as little as $10.00 (used) from Amazon.com. --Don Simons =============================== 1 1 4 4 0 0 0 0 1 6 20 0 t ./ Ab h PMX 2.413 natural order fs24 zan zcs an zdn zfs / Rd fs24 zan zef+ fs2 zcs za zfs / Rd m6400 fn24 zgf zbf fn zgf zd+ zfn bf-u zaf zfn / Rd m2400 fs2l za zef+ zfs / Rd L2 m4400 fs2 zcs zas zfs fn zaf zdf zgf / Rd ds24 zgs zds+ zfs af zcn- zef- zaf- / Rd m2400 gn24l zbf zcn zef / Rd ef2 zdf zbf zgn / Rd L3 en24 zgn zbn zdn zen / Rd m4400 df24 zfn zaf zcn zef fs zds zbn zfs zds / Rd m2400 gn2l zbf zdf zef zgn / Rd af zfn zdf zaf zfn zdf / % % Read's order % h Read's order (Ao in every chord) L4 m4400 cs25uAo zfs- zan fs+Ao za-n zdn / Rd fs24Ao zef+ zan- fs25Ao zfs- za zcs / Rd m6400 bf24uAo zgf zfn fn25Ao zd zgf- zfn bfuAo zaf zfn / Rd m2400 fs24lAo za zfs+ zef / Rd L5 m4400 fs25Ao zfs- zcs+ zas fn2lAo zgf+ zdf zaf / Rd fs25uAo zgs- zds+ zds- ef24Ao zaf+ zcn- zaf- / Rd m2400 gn24lAo zef+ zcn zbf / Rd gn24lAo zef+ zdf zbf / Rd L6 en24Ao zen+ zdn zgn- zbn / Rd m4400 ef25uAo zfn- zcn+ zdf- zaf+ fs24Ao zfs+ zds zds- zbn+ / Rd m2400 gn25Ao zgn- zef+ zdf zbf / Rd af24Ao zdf- zfn // af25Ao zdf- zfn / _______________________________________________ TeX-music mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://sunsite.dk/mailman/listinfo/tex-music
