May I add just two little comments:

If you intend to suppress "short" extension lines in general, you can
also set \minlyrrulelength=<something> in your preamble, giving its
effect a global scope.

The melisma syntax involving the '_' character is not directly related
to the word extension lines - it's defined like that just because of its
nice, suggestive appearance. As Christian told, the melisma layout is
controlled soleley by \minlyrrulelength.
