I notice exactly the same strange behavior under mandrake linux 9.1 for PPC.
I don't recognize that behaviour with my current typesetting project whether I use an f2c- or a g77 compiled pmx (2.415) binary. My OS environment is good old linux i686 Redhat 7.3.
