Dear fellow music typesetters.

For a fine little renaissance piece which I've published today ("Gioite tutti" by Orazio Vecchi) I needed a symbol for representing a special mensural notation feature, 'coloration' (*) in my transcription to modern notation. Per convention that is done by means of broken brackets while another mensural notation feature, the 'ligature', is usually represented by solid brackets.

Drawing solid brackets, possibly sloped, within M-Tx typesetting is easily done by applying the musixtex macros \ovbkt and \unbkt as in-line tex. But there is no pre-existing musixtex macros for drawing (possibly sloped) broken brackets, or at least I haven't found such macros.

The attached macro file demonstrates how to use 'pstricks' for drawing your own music symbols, in this case broken brackets. 'pstricks' is a postscript drawing macro collection coming with plain tex.

A drawback with this method is that it is incompatible with pdftex and dvipdfm. In order to generate pdf output looking reasonably on your screen you need to first generate a type 1 based postscript file which you'll afterwards convert to pdf with ps2pdf.

(*) In this piece the colorations denote hemioles, a musically significant change of accents within triple meter.
