Dear Musixtexers,

For years I could use pmx without problems after Christian Mondrups had helped
me generously with the installation, years ago. Now, however, I had to change
to a newer version of my Linux system which is now SuSE Linux 9.3. The system
works fine so far, but of course I'd like to have pmx again which has to be
installed from the source files the links to them are given on "MusiXTeX and
Related Software" (http://icking-music-archive.org/software/indexmt6.html).
Trying to follow the instructions ("HOWTO install MusiXTeX, PMX, and M-Tx
under Linux/Unix"), however, I encountered the following difficulties:

Point 1.2: "From the subdirectory mf of the MusiXTeX distribution copy
all files to /usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/musixtex/."

Point 1.2: "Then either delete all files from the directory
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/musixtex/ or copy all files from the
directory tfm of the MusiXTeX distribution."

I tried that. But the existing files in those directories do not permit to
write on them (at least, this is the default setting, and I hesitate to
override as root such a default setting by brute force.)

Point 3.1.1: "Compiling using Makefile" produced a big number of error
messages. Therefore I tried "Compiling the FORTRAN source files", but there is
the next problem:

Point 3.1.2: "Download a PMX source distribution, for example pmx2506.zip into
a temporary directory, for example /usr/local/src and unzip it. The result is
a directory, pmx-2506."

This does not work: The command

unzip pmx2506.zip

yields the 4 files pmx2506.for, pmxab.exe, pmxbeta.html, pmx.tex (where
"...exe" shows that I am on the wrong continent!) There is no directory
"pmx-2506".

Again I would be grateful for any help with my amateurish problems!

Hartmut
