it seemes that the example not complete. Unfortunately, there is a
first line preceeding the TeX commands missing. This line must contain
three dashes. The complete example should look like:

If you have named the file example.pmx you can run pmx with:

prompt> pmx example

or

prompt> pmx example.pmx

It is important that the file extension is .pmx because otherwise
pmx will not find it. After pmx has finished, you will find a file
named example.dvi .
