Man, I also am amazed, but about the amazement! In my experience,
this notation is EXTREMELY common with many publishers, and in
a quite unambiguous meaning, viz. SOLELY as a shorthand for
repetitive short notes, and NOT as a tremolo, as I have written
before, both in this sequence of emails, and in my PMX tutorial.
Is this, perhaps, ideosyncratic with German music publishers ??
I admit I have never yet seen the slashes in a baroque or
classic autograph; but that means nothing, since
(i) I have studied so few autographs, and
(ii) I assume that for baroque and classical musicians the
correct meaning must have been obvious from the context.
The constructive result of this long discussion is that now
we PMXers no exactly how to implement such slashes. Whether it
is wise to use them can then be left to the discretion of
whoever thinks she needs such a symbol.
