I can reproduce this error. As you have correctly inferred, this error
message comes from MusiXTeX, not PMX. (Daniel barely acknowledged the
existence of PMX, let alone help write error messages for it). Specifically,
the ONLY thing that changes in the TeX file when you change fracindent is
\parindent. It's possible that there is more hardspace being requested than
is available, even though \parindent is still much smaller than \hsize. I'm
posting this reply to the list in case any of the TeXperts on the list cares
to look further into it. As to whether to mention it in any documentation, I
certainly don't plan to but if you want to it's your choice. Obviously I
can't say "no one would ever try such a big fracindent," because you did try
it, if only as an experiment. But I can guarantee it's not going to come up
very often at all, so the question is whether it's worth the space.
