Clarification: It is true that in the PMX source file "D" cannot be the
first COMMAND in a bar. But on the printed page, by using the shifting
option on a "D" placed after the first NOTE in a bar, you can start a
hairpin as close as you want to the bar line (provided you don't shift it
more than 25.5 notehead widths). For example

Comment: For placing text anywhere, you can also use various inline MusiXTeX
commands such as \zcharnote. These must be placed before the note to which
they are indexed. The vertical position of the text is controlled by the
first parameter (be sure to use a number rather than a letter), and the
horizontal position can be adjusted using \kern... within the second
parameter.
