Don: The current convention in both MiKTeX and TeXLive is to put dvips map files in fonts/map/dvips/<package>/ Presumably MiKTeX needed musix.map to run dvips and looked in fonts/map/dvips/musixtex because that's where its data base says the file would be. It then asked to install musixtex because it doesn't know Dieter has installed musixtex on his own. (BTW, in an updated MiKTeX system, the relevant <package> name would be musixtex-fonts.) I don't know how fussy MiKTeX is about locations of map files.
