The answer you will get on the MiKTeX list (maybe from me!) would be to upgrade to MiKTeX 2.9 (pdfopen is certainly working on my Windows 7 system with Adobe Reader X). MiKTeX 2.6 is very old - I would upgrade to 2.9 carefully (as in, not on your main machine first or the night before a critical document has to be delivered) as the chances of jumping that many versions without something rearing its ugly head are slim.
