Well, actually it turns out that although mtx.tex seems not to need "\input pmx", it must be loaded before "\input musixlyr" which mtx.tex does need, since musixlyr.tex operates by monkey-patching macros some of which are defined in pmx.tex. That's something I knew in 2001 but had forgotten :-(.
