If you dislike this notation read 
http://imslp.org/wiki/Il_Transilvano_(Various) Part 2, about "intavolare" 
= to put 3 or 4 one-part staves into 2 staves. The notes played by either 
hand are always put into its corresponding staff. No dotted lines accross 
staves are needed to denote the parts like in a modern score. Same for r.h 
and l.h. indications. :-)
