mtx and pmx are preprocessors that generate input for musixtex and musixdoc.pdf will provide information for such localized changes; e.g. from Section 16.1: The height above the top staff line of the horizontal line in a volta symbol is determined by the token \raisevolta which is 4\internote by default.
