The font problem is easy to solve: use LuaTeX. musixtex -F "luatex" -p 312a
gives the attached pdf I'll need a bit more detail of what "tried to integrate this with certain pieces of the main book preamble" involves to advise on that. But maybe it is no longer necessary if the width is set with PMX commands. -- Dirk
