Modern instrumentalists of string instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin,
etc.) use a hybrid form of tablature in which notes have (downward) stems
and beams attached. I believe this kind of tablature was first introduced
by Pete Seeger in his banjo instruction book first published in 1948.

I've developed a package that combines traditional Gelten tablature
notation already in MusiXTeX with the stems and beams of conventional music
notation.

The package is available at WIMA.
