I get the same output using musixtex-1.32 so that's not the issue.  Have
you taken into account the following:

The only known disadvantage with use of musixvbm is that many dvi viewers
(includ-
ing xdvi and yap) do not support the “tpic specials” that implement
vectorized beams in
dvi output, so that no beams are shown ; however, Postscript and PDF output
generated
using dvips and ps2pdf (or using dvipdfm, or by processing the score using
pdfetex)
should be satisfactory.
