The new Sept. 2014 Backpacker Magazine has a full page photo of the Chinese
Wall on pg. 66. This 1,100 ft. tall limestone escarpment runs for 22 miles.
Very impressive. In 1974 Mike McEachern along with Steve and Dino put together
a trip into the Bob, centered on Silvertip Peak, only 5 miles or so from the
Chinese Wall. There was one brief recon trip the summer of 1973. This started a
series of great caving trips into the Bob which attracted cavers from all over
the US, and especially Texas. I have been to many places over the years but the
Chinese Wall remains a top attraction. Around a 20 mile hike to get there. See
the Alpine Karst newsletters for trip details, or ask Bill Steele. As I recall
Thomas Moore and I were the first or among the first cavers to hike to the top
of the Chinese Wall. The largest population of Grizzly Bears in the lower 48
are located in the Bob.
