I just learned a few minutes ago, that a former member of GHG has just been released from the hospital, after falling off a roof on May 22nd. He claims to have broken 5 bones including his back. I will just call him Mark for the time -being.
Mark joined GHG around 1991 and came to most of the meetings for about 3 years. He has been a police officer for about 24 years, most of that with the Houston Police Dept. I can not tell you much about him. Susan Herpin took him to the Guads, but they never spoke of it again. He claimed to have scuba dived in some Florida caves in 1990, but had never done any dry caving. He came across as a Gomer Pyle or, Barney Fife, and to the best of my knowledge never made it on to any of the other trips going on. I was not living in Houston at the time he was most active in GHG. I can say he kept a yellow Texas bat-sticker on his old Toyota 4x4, for 15 years, so for that reason, I always considered him a caver. Our paths have crossed several times a year in the duties of our job, since then, and we accidentally had lunch about a year ago. At that time, he said he had done some caving with non-caver friends in the Guard back in the 1990's. He said he wanted to teach his kids about caving. I know for a fact he sincerely wanted to go caving when he was at GHG. Also, I think he had a hobby with ham radios. Had he had Facebook, and email, and rexting back in 1993, he would have most likely hooked up with some cavers. I do not know anybody that remembers him. David Locklear
