The 2013 DFW Grotto Christmas party will be this Saturday, Dec. 21st, starting
at 7:00 PM at Steve Webb's house (same as last year). All cavers,
want-to-be-cavers, soon-to-be-cavers and caver friends are welcome to attend,
especially folks from out of town and people we haven't seen much lately.
Well-behaved children and dogs are welcome (there's a fenced-in area in the
back yard for the 4-legged critters), well-behaved cavers...oh, just show up
and have a good time!
The party is a potluck dinner so bring something to share. There will be a
large spiral-baked ham and some alcoholic beverages provided but feel free to
bring something liquid to share, too. Show up at 7 PM or come later if you have
other parties to attend. There's plenty of room to camp out if you don't want
to drive home and there is lots of floor space, too.
There will be a gift exchange but unlike previous years it will not be a "white
elephant" exchange as participation in the exchange has fallen off (people are
reluctant to drag home something huge), but small "gag gifts" are requested
instead. The gift exchange is not mandatory, so don't let that prevent you from
showing up for the fun.
Directions from Steve to his house:
The house is in Frisco, just north of the Colony, just off of Farm to Market
road 423.
For a lot of people, the tollway will end up being the best way to travel north.
The address is 2105 Goodnight Trail, Frisco TX 75034. Google maps will take
you there, and streetview actually has a pic of the house.
If it tries to take you on King Road (just off main street) DON'T, it is under
construction.

This morning the Department announced it's Environmental Achievement Awards.
One went to Rene Ohms at Jewel Cave NM. The announcement read, in part:
I am pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013 Department of the Interior
Environmental Achievement Awards.
These Awards recognize departmental employees and partners who have attained
exceptional achievements under Executive Order 13514 “Federal Leadership in
Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance” and for cleaning up
contaminated land. The Award categories are: Sustainability Hero; Green
Innovation; Lean, Clean and Green; Good Neighbor; Green Dream Team; Building
the Future; and Environmental Remediation.
An interdisciplinary panel of reviewers from the Department’s bureaus and
offices evaluated nominations to recommend Award recipients and honorable
mentions. The panel is chaired by the Office of Environmental Policy and
Compliance

Duracell is marketing a AA and AAA alkaline battery they are claiming is
better than their Coppertop line.
They are calling it Quantum. I wonder if this is the same thing as the
so-called "Ultra."
If there is some new chemical process going on, it would be worth taking a
look at.
Costco has a 30 pack for $ 14.99, plus tax.
Whereas, they also have the Coppertop line for the same price, but you do
get 10 more AA batteries.
AAA's are more expensive at Costco.
It would be interesting to me to see a caver test all 4 of these side by
side, and post their results.

I am super excited at the moment. The Houston MetroRail service I have
been talking about starts running Saturday, and I now live just a short
walk from the new rail-platform which is 2 miles from most of my customers
who are within walking distance of one of the downtown rail-platforms. My
theory is that this is going to take some of the stress out of my hectic
driving and parking routine. However, the past 3 months of living in the
ghetto has been extremely unpleasant, almost to the point of being
unbearable.

The Karst Waters Institute Board of Directors is pleased to announce Dr. Robert
(Bob) Loucks as the 2014 Karst Award honoree. Dr. Loucks received a B.A. from
SUNY Binghamton and the Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin. He
started his research career at the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University
of Texas at Austin in 1976 and then worked for Cities Service and ACRO research
Laboratories until he returned to the Bureau of Economic Geology in 2000 as a
Senior Research Scientist and a member of the Jackson School of Geosciences
Graduate Studies Committee.
Dr. Loucks has conducted research and made contributions in sedimentology and
diagenesis of carbonates, sandstones, and mudrocks. In each of these rock types
he has concentrated on the origin of pore networks and their evolution during
burial; his ultimate goal has always been the improvement of reservoir-quality
prediction. His work on pore networks has included discovering nanopore types
in shale-gas and shale-oil systems, establishing micropore types and origins in
limestones, defining evolution of pore types in sandstones, and characterizing
collapsed cavern and fracture systems in carbonate and evaporite paleokarst.
His research on carbonate paleokarst has contributed to the understanding of
oil and gas in carbonate strata: specifically, the origin of vug/fracture pore
networks and the distribution and heterogeneity of reservoirs. The recognition
of how and when cave systems collapse with burial has led to identification of
such collapsed systems on seismic data. Loucks' present research on evaporite
paleokarst systems is identifying the depositional and diagenetic processes
that determine whether evaporite karst will lead to a reservoir or seal.
Dr. Loucks is author or co-author of nearly 150 articles, many of them on
paleokarst processes and reservoirs. He has been recognized with several
research awards, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists
Robert R. Berg Outstanding Research Award and the Jackson School of Geosciences
Outstanding Research Award. He was selected as an APPG Dean A. McGee
International Distinguished Lecturer, as a Permian Basin Section of SEPM
Honorary Life Member Awardee, and as an Honorary Research Fellow, School of
Geological Science, Kingston University, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, UK. He
has received several best paper and presentation awards, including the 2000 and
2010 Wallace E. Pratt Awards for best AAPG Bulletin paper, 2006 and 2010 A. I.
Levorsen Awards for Best Paper, 2008 and 2011 EMD President's Certificate for
Excellence in Presentation, SEPM Excellence of Presentation Award, A. Philpott
Excellence of Presentation Award, SEPM Excellence of Poster Presentation Award,
and Gordon Atwater Best Poster Award.
The 2014 KWI Awards banquet will be Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 7 PM at Americas
in The Woodlands, TX. Dr. Loucks will speak at the banquet on the topic of "How
Modern Karst Studies Lead to Understanding the Development and Burial Evolution
of Paleokarst Reservoirs." Other awards will also be given. Dinner will cost
$75 per person, and includes hors d'oeuvres, dinner with choice of entrees and
basic beverages. Wine and beer will be available as a cash bar option. Seating
