That's ridiculous, this list traffic has gone way down compared to previous
years. We are also at our highest point in membership, 414 members
currently.

When I took over the list in 2008 or so, we had just barely over 300
members.

It always seems that when someone sees a post that they don't agree with or
don't like, they want to complain about the number of posts or that it's
not appropriate. As most people state, you have a delete key, or use a
filter/rule on your email client to sort the email.

These last few days of posts have been directly related to caving. I don't
know what else people are looking for in a mailing list that covers such a
large geographic area.

Pete, if you know someone specifically that quit and was complaining about
the posts, I'd be interested in chatting with them, please forward this
email to them.

Thanks

I give David kudos for this idea. It does have something vaguely related to
caves and karst.

Mr. Goldsmith,

I would like to thank you and commend you for always administering this
listserv with fairness of mind. You are an adept peace keeper and nonsense
stopper including when it is my nonsense.

Be cuz the oats aren't fun or interesting. Sometimes a bit informative but not
always!

I would assume this is because of the number of strictly non caving related
posts. What ever happened to the"OT"
site for this purpose? As a dedicated old Spelunker from the 50's and 60's, I
enjoy the varied subjects posted on Cavetex. After all, it seems as much for
entertainment as for information. If the post is of no interest I just hit
delete. When and if I revisit a favorite cave of my youth I will take a picture
of one of the entrances and post it as my submission for mystery cave of the
month. David, for an "Armchair Caver" as you profess, you have seen/visited
more caves than most "Cavers" and the details you remember are incredible. Keep
the good stuff coming.
Since "Retiring" to my little Dripping Springs paradise, my dance card is so
full it is difficult to make time to read and delete the caver postings. For
anyone interested, I have a great property here for camping and communing with
nature only 24 miles from Austin.

The original thread was "Mystery Cave of the Month" - not "Mystery
Cave of the Hour."

It was not my idea. I am certain this was something that once ran
in the Texas
Caver, or in some caver newsletter that I saw somewhere.

I am trying hard to not post stuff. I had an interesting article about caver
urination systems, but I never posted it.

There is an exciting new $ 15 LED headlamp that needs to be reviewed,
but I skipped
it.

I post-poned the 2014 East Texas Caver's Cookout till 2015, but did
not tell anybody.

I enjoyed the Mystery Cave pictures, but didn't say anything.

And isn't it only the Austin cavers, that are always posting personal
things like cars
for sale, and pool parties, lost poodles, and other stuff that has
nothing to do with caving ?

My good friend, Don, calling me a troll, was unexpected. I do not
feel like a troll, as I
really don't believe that I post stuff for attention, or to create discord.

Thanks for chiming in and hosting this, Charles and I'm with Mark, Nancy, and
Fritz.

Keep posting, David!

Like CaveTex is soooo overloaded. Please!

Let the Locklear haters, Content Nazis, and general curmudgeons go elsewhere
then.

You truly won't be missed.

I found a way to escape Locklear. Go in a cave. You won't see him there.

Subject: 2014 Cartographic Salon

Hi, all. I have a few notes about the Cartography Salon at this year's convention in Huntsville. It's a while off yet, but this is a good time to start your planning.

1. The Cartography Salon website was revamped last month. The changes are intended to promote the Salon, encourage people to enter, make the rules and schedule easier to figure out, and hopefully draw more people to the critiques. Please take a look and please get back to me if you see anything that needs fixing. You can find the Cartography Salon website at . . .

 http://www.caves.org/committee/salons/Cartographic.shtml

2. The entry form was rewritten to add clarity.

3. The publication rights section of the entry form was changed to cover only publication at the Salon Awards Show and in the Cartography website. The time limit was removed. It was decided that the NSS News will handle it's own permissions separately, to fit its own needs.

4. Entry of web-based cave maps is now solicited specifically by the Cartographic Salon. Just what this will bring the Salon is an interesting question. We shall see. I hope the movie is right, that "if you build it, they will come."

5. Please do join us at the Critique Session. Encourage your friends to come, too.

6. We need judges for the Cartographic Salon. If you have some experience with the Salon, and have an interest in cave cartography, please consider judging this year. This is one of the biggest contributions you can make to art of cave mapping. Email me if you have an interest.

6. Enter your maps!

Thanks

Dwight
