Great job, Ellie and Mark!
Many thanks to the folks on the slate - excellent to see some new names/people
step up.
I don't know if it's too late, and it's been said by others before, and by all
means no offense to those already on the slate, however it is always good to
have more than one person per position to choose from when voting. Especially
if for some reason someone has to drop out at the last minute.
With that said, I know what a challenge it is to get even one person to step
up. I know I am not currently in a position to do so because I am chair of the
NSS and TCMA grants committees and those are full time jobs in addition to the
paying one.
And for what it's worth, these folks currently on the ballot have my full
support and vote! I know each of you, have caved with most of you, and know
you will represent the TSA well with your fresh ideas and actions.
I am equally excited by electronic voting!

The Mars rover Curiosity has traveled 150 meters in one day.
My question is,
what is the cave distance record for a remotely controlled device, or what
are some of the significant records in speleo-robotics ?
I think Don Cooper holds the Texas record at Kiwi Cave with his
semi-indestructible speleo-copter.

>From her mother:
Good news,
Mallory is being discharged from Touchstone, Thursday, September 12--next
week. She is thrilled. She hates being at this place, not because it is bad
or the people are not nice. She just has had enough of living in an
institution-as she says it, she is done. She so wants to be home. They had a
meeting today with the doctors, therapists and her ( I was not allowed at
this meeting). We will have a meeting with them before discharge. She is
progressing well with what they focus on in their therapy. They are
adjusting her therapy so it will be more relevant for what she needs to get
back to work and to drive. So the rest of her progress will be accomplished
with time, rest at our house, family, and then back to Houston for
outpatient care at Tirr where she can be in her apartment. I will learn some
more Houston roads. But actually I was getting comfortable with it as long
as I stayed off the Interstate.
All you parents can appreciate this. I had to go back to the hotel late last
night and I receive a text from Mal-"Text me when you are safe in your
room." That was a first. I am the one who asks that. So today I mention how
funny that was. Her response," Mom, you don't understand. I worry." I looked
at her and said, "You don't think we have worried all these years?" Her
response, "Yes, but now I understand how fast something can happen." If they
only knew when they were teenagers.
I am going to have to do some head adjusting. It's going to be rough for me
to let Mal get back into the real world. I suspect I am now a totally
paranoid person. It will be good to get back home and to our world. This
whole time has just been surreal. You want to just wake up and find it
didn't happen. But it did and as Mal keeps saying,"We're all going to be
fine." And she is right. We are so fortunate. I think back on all the
horrible things the doctors said could happen and they didn't. I truly
believe all the prayers and the fine medical staff brought our Mallory back
to us. I could not have done it without all the support you gave. Even when
there was nothing else I needed, knowing that I could ask for help and you
would have been there in a heartbeat was such a consolation. Steve, Caleb,
and I never felt alone. That was a godsend. I learned a lot about reaching
out to people and hope I am a much better person. Good night. I have to go
get the clothes out of the dryer. This is interesting. Washing clothes in a
hotel!

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -KCBD 11 in Lubbock
A mystery tunnel is creating quite a buzz in a north Lubbock neighborhood.
Lee Smithwick discovered it on his property this week, when part of his yard
collapsed.
"We were watering the yard and we came out and the whole sprinkler system and
everything sank," Smithwick said.
Smithwick says he thought it was a sinkhole, but then he saw railroad ties.
He alerted fire and police departments and upon further examination, they
discovered it was a hidden tunnel, braced with railroad ties.
Apparently one broke, causing the collapse.
Now the question is, who built it?
Smithwick says local historians have come out to see the tunnel for themselves.
"First they thought it might be a bunker, but it's definitely a tunnel. Nobody
knows who built it or why they would build it. They're thinking maybe it's
associated with the railroad back in 1909, but you're looking at an underground
tunnel for 100 years."
Smithwick says they've drilled a few holes in the ground, and it appears the
tunnel runs underneath the road in front of his house.
He says city inspectors have also come out, and they're meeting Thursday to
figure out if they need take action.
The area has been marked off with caution tape.
We'll continue to follow this story online and on the air at KCBD NewsChannel
11.
