>From Mal's mother, Vickie: Sunday Update, July 28, 2013:
Mallory is still unconscious, but moving more, particularly her legs whereas she used to just move her arms. Tonight after they put in a new line, and did other things, she actually opened her eyes halfway, and then she blinked a few times. She still has fever, is fighting infection and they have determined she has a bacterial infection for one thing. So people now have to put on their disposable gowns. It's better not to touch her. They scared me when they came to do a test to check if her brain is also a source of infection. It struck me as one more scary problem. They wanted to stick a needle in her spine and draw out fluid. It's all one system. But she did not do well, her heart rate went too high so they did not do it. They just upped the antibiotic. Let's just hope she does not have infection in her brain. Four days ago, she did not. Tomorrow they will do the trachea tube. It's not impossible the breathing tube she has now is causing some of this infection, according to the doctors. It may be just a reflex or a mother's wishful thinking, but when I held her hand and told her I had to leave, it just felt like she was resisting me letting go of her hand.
