Don,
I assume you are referring to the "Spelunking" part.
There is a local outdoor club here ... Probably a lot smaller than one in
Austin, I am founding member from back in 1983...
What I did here, was get involved and lead the caving trips. I take them to
simple caves and usually get some PBSS members to help lead if needed or if I
can't make it. The TCMA has benefited with a surge in memberships when we go to
AMC. The PBSS has gained about 8 members in the last year and 2 of them are on
their way to becoming hard core vertical cavers...

40 years ago right about now sitting in the border crossing building on my
first trip to Mexico, first cave trip, first camping trip. Destination - Gruta
del Palmito. Met my own future cave man on that trip, and have never stopped
wanting to go underground. Don't think anyone ever wrote up that trip, either.

Howdy Cavers!
Urgent news is that the TCMA life membership cost is increasing to $500;
however, there will be a summer sale from today until July 31 when you can
still purchase a life membership for $400. This decision was made because
we have sold out of the promotional life member survey pouches.
*TCMA Updates for the past two months:*
The TSA Spring Convention was great fun. The annual TCMA fundraising
auction was a huge success. The presentation on "TCMA - What You Know and
What You Know Now" was well received and generated good interest and
support. The members meeting was well attended.
The Robber Baron Cave Open House on April 27 was also very successful.
Attendance was down a bit from the previous year due to Fiesta happening
that same weekend; however, the crowd was generous and we raised almost as
much money as last year. Over 40 volunteers came out to support the event,
and it was a fun time for all. Organized by preserve manager Joe Mitchell.
A Rolling Oaks Preserve work day also occurred in April. The 14
volunteers who came out for the work day loaded up and hauled out off a
huge trash pile dug out of Niche Cave last fall and removed several large
rocks from Niche Cave. Organized by preserve manager Ellie Watson.
The Board of Directors met in Austin yesterday, and they are hard at work
making policy decisions to keep the TCMA current and professional. Owning
and managing cave preserves with your support!

If you are interested in trips to our cave preserves, please contact your
local grotto, as trips occur regularly to some of our preserves, including
Whirlpool Preserve, Robber Baron Preserve, and Deep & Punkin Preserve.

Ouch! I could have gotten this for $300 about a year and a half ago, but that
was a one time chunk of change for us.
Are there any plans to provide a payment plan of any kind for those who can not
afford this but might want to be a life member. This type of cost as a lump sum
closes out a lot of folks, just like the NSS life membership cost. Not everyone
lives on credit these days.

I couldn't talk to him today - his Girls happily wore him out for Fathers Day.
But Mary Ann says he's doing well, getting his nutrition and meds and holding
steady. The Bambergers' celebration meant a lot to him. They are all coping
together, taking it as it comes along.

I am celebrating Father' Day dinner at Long John's in San Marcos. This is
upscale by my standards.
This is a long-winded story about my weekend.
I had to work in the town of Deer Park on Saturday. After that, I had to
rush to the Sharpstown area of Houston to attend my daughter's first ballet
recital where she would be performing in front of the family and about 200
others. Little did I know, but I would have to sit thru dance routines of
80 other young girls, before I would get to watch my daughter's 10 second
twirl.
It seemed obvious that my hopes of my daughter going caving with me instead
of ballet are not good.
I left there totally spent, and pondered the idea of driving to the annual
Strickland Pond Party.
I got there about 11 pm, as many cavers were leaving. But I did get plenty
to eat, and drink and swam for the first time in the pond. I could have
easily fallen asleep on the inner tube and slept till sunrise.
The Strickland's rolled out the red carpet and let me sleep in a real bed
and take a shower. I hated to leave.
Sunday morning, things worked out to where I could poke around in Kiwi
Sink. Ernie was super helpful and coming by every hour to make sure I was
o.k.
I got 2-1/2 barrels loaded with rock and dirt. And loosened up a few
medium-size rocks that should be very easy to remove at the next dig. The
big news is you can now see way down into the lower passage from the top of
the ladder. Looks like about 40 feet down. And a fat person can now go
down there and dig. If it does not rain, it will be easy to fill 2 more
barrels.
The next dig is going to be awesome. I hope I can make it.
I gave the landowner the headlamp that I just reviewed on Cavetex. He
thought it was cool.
I am about to make the arduous drive home.

Many of you have been to the Texas Cave Conservancy Headquarters
here in Cedar Park, Texas. For the past nine years we have created a
number of excellent memories at this location. Last April, the TCC
received an e-mail from the owners of the house and land requesting us to
purchase the property. We sent them an e-mail saying we were ready to
purchase it for the $175,000 price in the Mandatory Lease Purchase
Contract. They turned our offer down, saying that they would have to have
it appraised and get back to us with a new price at a later date.
We then looked carefully at the situation and determined that the
1978 house was not worth more than we had offered. We offered to
purchase the 3.1 acres with the caves behind the house. This offer was
also rejected.
We were fortunate that we able to find a new location in the same area.
Our new office was built this year, 2013 and will work great for the Texas
Cave Conservancy and members of the caving community.
We are now moved into the new TCC office and headquarters. It will make a
great party site and office. Cavers will still be able to gather here for
the 50 to 70 cave trips per year that are conducted through the TCC. We
will even have showers and a place to unwind after the cave trips. When
the owners of the old place get around to placing it on the market we will
make the new owner an offer for the 3.1 acres. The TCC will not have
camping available until CAVE Day, September 14th 2013. Toward that end,
we are working on acquiring a new TCC Campground.
