Folks,
The Bexar Grotto will be holding their annual Christmas (Holiday) Party on
Saturday, December 15th at Geary and Sue Schindel's house at 11310 Whisper
Dawn, San Antonio 78230. Phone is 210.479.2151. This is a pot luck dinner so
bring a dish and your favorite beverage. The party starts between 5 and 6 pm
and runs until whenever. The hot tub is up and running so bring your suit and a
towel or not. There will also be a white elephant gift exchange during the
evening. The grill will be fired up if you want to bring something to cook.
Dress is party casual. For those who don't want to drive home or can't, there
will be plenty of bed or floor space. Anyone left over on Sunday morning will
get breakfast and roped into helping clean up. All cavers and their guests are
welcome. We have a very special guest or two scheduled to attend this year.
Last year, we had 77 folks that signed the guest book.
Party rules - please don't block the neighbor's driveways but parking on the
street is fine (not the sidewalk). If you bring a dish, please try to take it
home with you. If you see one of your old dishes from last year's party, take
that home also. However, our cooler collection is starting to dwindle so if
you see your old cooler, it's ok to leave it until next year. Also, please stay
off the roof, especially since it's new and shiny and very slick.
Geary and Sue Schindel

Folks,
One slight addition or correct to the Christmas Party announcement, we are also
doing a can and clothes drive, if you would like to donate can or dry goods at
the party, well be happy to distribute them. Same for old clothes, if you have
some clothes you would like to donate, you can place them in a plastic bag and
we'll make sure they get to a good home.

Hey Caver !!!
You are cordially invited to the next UT Grotto meeting - Wednesday
December 7th from 7:45PM- 9:00PM
University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html
Peter Sprouse will present the evenings program as Cave Paintings in Baja
California
Peter will share a recent trip to document pictograph caves in Baja
California Sur. These were located in a remote mountain range accessed by a
three day horseback ride. Come out to share in the stories from on high as
well as the fun and fellowship with Austin Texas Cavers.
For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org
Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.
Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com
The UT Grotto Program calendar is wide open and needs you, the caver with
photos and a story to share about your adventures, scientific research, or
something else really cool. Contact me.

There are two different correlations between the Maya longcount and
the Gregorian calendar. 13 0 0 0 0 being December 21 is the favorite
in the press, probably because of the coincidence with the winter
solstice. (Actually, the longcount changes at sunset on the previous
day.) The other has it on December 23; this one is preferred by
Austin's Mayanist and one-time caver Barb MacLeod. Those disappointed
that the world has not ended can party again the evening of the twenty-
second, which is, conveniently, a Saturday. -- Mixon

The AMCS has two new books recently added to its catalog.
The Association for Mexican Cave Studies announces the publication of
its bulletin 23, Heart of Earth: Studies in Maya Ritual Cave Use,
edited by James E. Brady. It contains twelve articles in its 142
pages. Softbound, $10 plus shipping, details at http://www.amcs-pubs.org/bul/bul23.html
.
New to our catalog of books is Cueva del Río La Venta: An Underground
Dream, published by La Venta Esplorazioni Geografiche in Italy, with
main authors Tullio Bernabei, Antonio De Vivo, Francesco Sauro, and
Giuseppe Savino. The 159-page hardcover book is heavily illlustrated
with color photos, including 70 full-page ones. Included is a detailed
description of the through-trip in the cave in Chiapas. Three days
were spent there on a dedicated photo trip for this book. A pocket in
the back contains a large, folded sheet with an area map on one side
and a 3-D diagram of the cave on the other. $35 plus shipping; see http://www.amcs-pubs.org/other/CuevaLaVenta.html
.
These will be available at the UT Grotto meeting this Wednesday. We
also have a few copies of the Spanish-language version of the Cueva
del Río La Venta book. I'll have at least one of those at the meeting.
They aren't in the catalog because we have so few of them.

Can someone put me in touch with Ben Edelstein? His video on a Mexican
caving trip won the video salon at the NSS convention, and I'd like to
get a copy for the AMCS archives.

Great Basin National Park, located in the Basin and Range province in
Nevada, contains 43 known caves.
The park is located in the southern Snake Range and despite being isolated from
other mountain ranges and caves by hotter, drier basins is home to fascinating
subterranean creatures.
Bioinventories in recent years have revealed new species to science and have
shed light about additional habitats that some species occupy.
Take a peek at the underground fauna during this webinar and learn more about
cave
ecology.
