offered again by Western Kentucky University. Since 1979, the courses of this
program have proven valuable to land managers, students, consultants, cavers,
and anyone interested in caves and karst.
Notice that a scholarship is available for students, which NCKRI is supporting.

The Hoffman Environmental Research Institute through its Center for Cave and
Karst Studies and in cooperation with the Mammoth Cave International Center for
Science and Learning and Western Kentucky University, United States, are
pleased to announce the launch of the Summer 2013 Karst Field Studies Program.
Courses this summer will include:
- Karst Geology, June 2-8, Dr. Art Palmer
- Karst Geophysics, June 9-15, Dr. Lewis Land
- Cave Photography, June 10-14, Dr. Dave Bunnell
- Karst Hydrology June 17-21, Drs. William White and Nicholas Crawford
- Cave Biology and Ecosystems, June 17-21, Dr. Dave Ashley
Courses may be taken for graduate, undergraduate, or continuing education
credit. Courses may also be taken just for fun as non-credit workshops.

A few months ago I announced that Beck Ranch Cave was closed. We had cavers
that went into the cave without permission and one group was detained by the
Sheriff. Other caver related factors contributed to the closure. Since the
closure, security efforts including a Home Owners Association Patrol,
electronic and other security activities has been started. PLEASE DO NOT GO
INTO BECK RANCH CAVE. If you are observed within the fence or in the cave YOU
WILL BE ARRESTED. The Texas Cave Conservancy will host our TCC Winter
Conference February 22-24 in the Cedar Park Texas area. We have caves there
that you will be able to visit. The owner of Beck Ranch Cave is holding an
event that same weekend and they will be out in the field. They know that we
are hosting our event in Cedar Park and have asked the Sheriff to provide an
extra patrol at the parking area and around the cave.
It is painful to have to send this message out, however, I feel that I owe the
Texas Caving community this notice- to give them a chance to decide if a
trespass trip is worth the effort. Please spread word of this message to other
cavers. Come on out and have fun at the TCC Winter Conference. Thank you for
working with the Texas Cave Conservancy.

Could I make one other suggestion:?
Please publish the names of past and future violators.
A bit of public shame and humiliation may go a long way to getting the
situation under control.
(Plus, we'll know who to personally thank for the new set of restrictions!).

There are now slightly over two thousand maps of Mexican caves on the
Association for Mexican Cave Studies web site. See amcs-pubs.org/maps .
The catalogs of the paper and disk archives of the AMCS have now been
added to amcs-pubs.org/library . There are 365 disks and over 4400
items in the paper archives catalog.
The paper archives are sorted only by file location, so at this point
you're at the mercy of your browser's "find" command to track anything
down. Someone hastily wrote a JavaScript program to extract from the
catalog file only the items meeting a flexible string search, but the
script has bugs and the author has disappeared on an extended vacation
to darkest Southeast Asia. If someone out there is a JavaScript expert
and could clean it up, many people would be helped immensely. Contact [email protected]

The AMCS library, in addition to the archives, contains about two
hundred books and one hundred periodical titles. Catalogs of these
library contents continue to be at amcs-pubs.org/library .
All of these are works in progress. There are no doubt several hundred
more maps lurking in the library and archives, and both the library
and the archives will continue to grow as various private holding
migrate to them. Additions are of course sought and welcome; contact [email protected]
.
The map collection was created and the library and archives cataloged
by Bill Mixon, who obviously has too much time on his hands.
