There will be a meeting at Bill Mixon's house on Monday, February 13,
at 8 p.m. for those interested in the activities (other than caving)
of the Association for Mexican Cave Studies and, especially, for those
interested in helping out. See amcs-pubs.org for information about the
AMCS, although the web site consists now mostly of a catalog of
publications--one of the things that needs work.
On Wednesday evening, February 22 (the fourth Wednesday), I will have
an open-house at my place for anyone interested in seeing my library
of cave books and periodicals and the AMCS library and archives. There
are a lot of resources there that I'd like to see more widely used,
and anyway I need to celebrate having just finished dusting the
shelves for the first time in, well, a while.
I'm at 14045 North Green Hills Loop, Austin 78737, (512) 288-4991.
Don't be fooled by the "North"; the location is really in northern
Hays Country, a couple of miles east of the Salt Lick. Google maps is
(again) wrong about the location of my house by a couple of hundred

working on the TCC Winter Conference presentation on the Southwest Texas
Grotto. This is the 45th Anniversary of the Southwest Texas Grotto. While
we can use any SWTG photos, we are missing the cavers listed below. Be sure
to attend the TCC Winter Conference February 24-26 in Cedar Park, Texas.

the ancient Maya lived in karst and the issues of modern people living in
that environment, with some examples of environmental karst challenges from
other parts of the world. Training workshops and other activities are also
planned; the final program is still in development. Please forward this

EspeleoQuintana Roo 2012
The Coahuila Association of Speleology and University of Quintana Roo are
pleased to invite you to participate in the International Congress of
Speleology on Mayan Caves. It will be held on 25-27 May 2012 in Playa del
Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Additionally, the Bureau (governing board) of the International Union of
Speleology (UIS by its French acronym) will meet in Mexico for the first
time and immediately after the congress on 28-29 May. The Bureau members
will also participate in the congress. The UIS represents 60 countries from
four continents.
The Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Speleological Associations
(FEALC by its Spanish acronym) will also be at the congress. FEALC
represents 11 countries including Mexico. Other groups involved in the
congress include the Mexican Union of Speleological Groups (UMAE),
Mexicos National Commission on Cave Diving and Speleology (FMAS),
Brazilian Speleological Society (SBE), among others.
This event is a unique opportunity to tighten ties among the worlds
speleological organizations, to learn of the sustainable projects that have
been implemented in other parts of the world, and the work of Quintana Roo
Green and Supportive in protecting subterranean resources. We invite you
to participate!

Environmental Problems in the United States," edited by Kenneth
Johnson and James Neal, Oklahoma Geological Survey circular 109, 353
pp, 2003, when I already had one. Cost me $24, including postage, but
I'll eat the postage and sell it for the list price of $20 unless you
want it mailed. Could deliver at a UT Grotto meeting or spring TSA
convention.
Compare the price of this book to the ripoff prices of the proceedings
of the various sinkhole conferences organized by the late Barry Beck.

Recent Sump Dives in Texas at O-9 Well, Reeds Cave, and Blowing Sink
Jean’s adventures include sharing in the fun where it takes a few friends
to haul gear down to the sump. She knows that Caves don’t end at the sump,
but it takes additional effort to push the passage when it is flooded.
