The very act of sending money to the infernal Church of the Subgenius makes
you an ordained minister in that blasphemous faith, which as I understand
it also makes me a possible minister. I have long ago lost the
documentation, so I still retain "plausible deniability." Ediger can
confirm this.

Thanks for all the responses! Well I asked the hubby to be.. and he said he'd
love to "make it official" in a cave.. but not in Feb. we are thinking about
St. Patty's Day.. Would anyone be able/available to arrange a trip to Honey
Creek or some Austin area cave on 3/17/12 and would one of you awesome ordained
people be able to attend if we got it all worked out!? =)

Mark, Gill and I (and maybe George) became "ordained" by the Universal Life
Church back in the late Sixties for the price of a small, volunteer donation.
The church was set up - or at least attempted to be used, but unsuccessfully -
as a draft-dodging tool under the draft laws of that Viet Nam time.
I joined out of general religous/anti-religious contrariness, as did many
others, after it was apparent this ordination was useless for avoiding the
draft. But it remained popular with 20-something curmudgeons like myself for
some years thereafter. Our intent is now fulfilled for the general
curmudgeonly public by such better elaborated theologies for deities such as
Bob and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Oztotl arose from the mists of the Mayan
past for Texas cavers around the same as our ordination, and in Florida we were
promoting The Great Newt as a caver deity.
I prefer to think of the status as "insub-ordination."

I'm one.
I'm not savvy on all the details, but there was ruckus amongthe leadership a
while back. Some records were lost.
If you're unsure of your credentials, you should verify themnow before you

Praise Bob and thanks to Roger, we now have an answer.
I used to have a Church of The SubGenius t-shirt with Bob on the front with his
always present pipe and omnipotent smile.
I think my kids stole it.
Somewhere, I have a picture of myself wearing said shirt while posing in front
of the Eiffel Tower.
Doing my part to spread the Gospel of Bob and to instill the Art of Slack while
I was in Europe.
Thanks for the Enlightenment (and memories!),

One wonders how that waterproofing "nano-sized armor" that "bonds
molecularly" to your device allows the various connectors to still
work. -- Mixon

I saw the video on their website about how they apply the treatment
(vacuum deposition, from what they show), and I wondered also how they
manage to waterproof the speakers, connectors, around the "home" button,
etc. But they do show videos of a working phone being submerged in
water. I'm very curious about this!

What I didn't see on the website that left me curious was if the treatment
would affect the optics in a Disto or a camera, or if the higher energy/heat
in strobes would destroy or damage the coating. In any case, it is pretty
cool and a movement in the right direction for cavers' needs.

Don't forget about those corporate caver-jets I saw the last time I went

I got off the phone with Val Hildreth-Werker a couple of hours ago. She is
fine. She walked away from the accident with a bruised toe and a scrape.
Jim's injuries were much worst. It will take multiple surgeries to repair
the damage to his leg and that from his lost arm. He had his second surgery
today. He is in ICU in El Paso and for the moment the signs are positive,
relative to his condition, for a good recovery. But all optimism at this
point should be tempered with caution and realism until his condition is
further stabilized and the full degree of his injuries understood.
Val told me she has been getting lots of calls from family and friends. She
greatly appreciates them but it is all a bit overwhelming. She has someone
helping her as a point-of-contact to share news with family. She asked if I
would be willing to serve as the point-of-contact for caving friends. Of
course I'll do whatever I can to help her. So this message is to give a
broad update to the people and caving lists I know have heard the news of
her and Jim's car accident, but also to ask that if you want more
information, do not contact Val for the short-term but to contact me. She'll
call me every few days with news as she has time and energy. I'll then share
it with those people who have contacted me. Some of you have already asked
me for updates. You don't need to ask again; you are on the list. Some of
you have asked for an address to send cards and best wishes. Val will send
me an address once Jim is out of ICU. If she needs help with anything, I'll
let you know.
Again, Val greatly appreciates the outpouring of support and love. I think
everyone can understand that she needs time to focus on Jim for a while and
to get their lives back on track, so please contact me rather than her for
the immediate future. I'll send you updates whenever I have them.
Thanks,
George
