In April of 1969, just before or just after a trip to Golondrinas, I
sent in a 6-cent postcard with my and Jette Feduska's names and
addresses on it--no money, no nuthin else--and received our
ordinations in the Universal Life Church a few days later. For 3-cents
I got ordained. Carta Valley SUCKS was in full swing at the time and I
performed baptisms at several caver functions ranging from State
College, Pennsylvania to California (and an NSS BOG party in Buda)
with water from Oztotl's Cave in Mexico provided by the Bittingers. In
the early '80s I joined the rabble at the Church of the Sub-Genius as
the Rev Theophilus Punnoval and still have and wear my Bob Dobbs shirt
(printed in my silk screen shop at Mockingburd 300). I've probably
done something somewhat fewer than 30 weddings in all--a few in caves,
on mountain tops and rivers, and on rope high up a cliff.

I recall that Doug Smith, aka Ivan Stang remembered you well when last I
spoke to him over e-mail in 1996 or so. You described that group as
somewhat like cavers, but into a different sort of fun.

1) Treasure Caves

A Day Out: Paleoanthropology

A trip report describing the public access to the Cradle of Humankind World
Heritage site, and specifically a trip to the Sterkfontein caves in South
Africa, the location of past and active digs for Australopithecus remains. The
author takes her 9-year old son along for the trip.

http://www.sciencemag.org/content/335/6064/40.1.full.pdf

2) Candle Soot as a Template for a Transparent Robust Superamphiphobic Coating

A very cool scientific paper outlining the construction of a "superamphiphobic"
coating--a coating that repels both water and hydrophobic solvents. Essentially
the authors use a layer of candle soot to create a rough, fractal surface on
glass that is used as the undersurface for a more permanent silica surface
(deposited by vapor diffusion). The underlying candle soot is then "baked off"
and the new, thin surface is transparent in the visible range (as long as it
remains a relatively thin layer). Supplemental info and movies make this a
fascinating article, and help explain the physics and engineering behind the
recently described Liquipel coating in a post by Mark Minton

Have any marriages lasted that had their wedding celebrations in a cave?
I recall a number of underground weddings over the years officiated by
Reverend Ediger or other ordained cavers but as far as I recall all ended in
divorce.

Oh, by "successful" I thought you meant "consumated." I would hope to hell
so.

So "cave-in" marriages, more than likely, turn in to "caved-in"
marriages?

I spoke to Chris Sobin and he said that he and Jenn are still hapily married,
so that may be a goood omen. On the other hand neither  goes caving anymore, so
that might be a bad omen. Take your pick...

Hi Lissa--
Times have changed since the free-loving, commitment-adverse days of the
1970s (when most marriages, whether celebrated above or below ground were
short-lived) so I¹m betting your upcoming matrimony will be long and happy.
Best wishes,
Frank

Carolina and I were married (by a caver preacher) in Cumberland Caverns
(their first wedding, it's on their website) back in 2000 right before their
annual Christmas Party for Cavers (500 of your best friends present and we
the evening meal was taken care of!)

We just celebrated our 11th anniversary and are still madly in love with
each other. Looking forward to a few more decades!

The national figure these days is that 2/3 of marriages fail. I think
that of the marriages I've officiated the figure is about the same. We
may be more average than we want to believe. I always caution people
that marriage is sorta like a caving expedition. Put a lot of energy
into it while it lasts and when the trip is over go away as friends.
If, by chance, the expedition doesn't end then you're either lucky or
exceptional and quite privileged to keep that energy going. Either
way, make the most of any relationship and be friends forever.

Oh dear now.

If she is to survive Marriage, certainly she can survive CaveTex.

Though seriously, metaphorically speaking;

Is it really that great of an idea to start your Marriage out in the hole?

;)~ lol

--- Begin Message --- There's one relatively recent marriage that is still intact. Bob West & Cindy Chamberlain married in Longhorn Cavern on May 6, 2006. I was honored to be Bob's Best Man, and it was the only time I've ever worn a tux and cowboy boots in a cave.

Have any marriages lasted that had their wedding celebrations in a cave?
I recall a number of underground weddings over the years officiated by
Reverend Ediger or other ordained cavers but as far as I recall all ended in
divorce.

done something somewhat fewer than 30 weddings in all--a few in caves,
on mountain tops and rivers, and on rope high up a cliff.

I know of a non-caver wedding celebrated in Longhorn Caverns that has
since been dissolved. If there's a pox on Weddings in Caves, it seems
it may not be specific to Cavers (which had always been my
pereception).

I know of many wedding of cavers and non-cavers alike, in churches and in
courthouses that did not last either. Is there a pattern here?
