At the Texas Cavers Reunion this year, the TSA recognized three new cavers who
have been caving for less than 2 years. These new cavers have shown great
enthusiasm to their fellow grotto members. This year, three grottos submitted
names of new cavers for the Chuck Stuehm Award. The recipient receives a free
year of membership in the TSA. This year, the three recipients were:
Bexar Grotto (San Antonio, TX) - Joe Shaertl
DFW Grotto (Dallas/Ft.Worth, TX) - Steve Webb
GHG Grotto (Greater Houston, TX) - Andy Edward
Congratulations and hope see y’all underground for many years!

I agree with Jerry. How about every time someone complains about DL on CT,
they have to provide an interesting post as a sort of "reader's time" fine? DL
has been posting such things on CT as long as there has been limestone in TX.
It is like the weather: get used to it.

While I might not agree with all of the emails that appear on CaveTex, I
certainly can't fault David for posting information on new models or cheap
deals on LED-related lights. They might not be of particular interest to me
that day, but it's not really that much trouble to delete them.
What I do find troubling is singling David out for not caving as often as
others (or at least the perception that a "real" caver actually goes
underground XX times per month). Of the several hundred cavers that supposedly
reside in Texas, most do not go caving on any regular basis. Some of them,
like David, also post on CaveTex. And some of their postings can also be
annoying to those that have narrow interests and/or small hearts.
So let's give old David a break. It seems easier to me to hit the delete key
than try to stab him in the eye.
Jerry.

I really want to stay tied into the Texas community via Cave Text. This is
only possible if I don't need to delete five of your emails a day that are only
tangentially related to caving. OT emails are fine as the exception, but when
they become the rule (and happen many times per a day) the list serve suffers.
Same goes for the GHG list serve.
Actually, I think a new rule, for you personally, would be to have 10 emails
per every actual caving trip(underground....not TCR type stuff). I would put
up with more of your emails if I knew you were actually getting underground.
For example, you would need to go caving every weekend for the next ten years
to get you to even. If you were to do that, I am sure your emails would be
much more interesting, and most importantly, pertinent to the caving community.
Cheers,
GP

I often scour the web looking for the latest newsworthy items related
to caving and try to post them
to CaveTex the second that they become available. I have been doing
that for several years, off and
on, but especially during times when work is slow.
In an effort to compromise with those of you who find my post
irrelevant or even detestable,
I am going to make a minor change to this effort:
I will not report anything that is on the "major" news networks, or
Caving News ( Facebook )
or on the NSS forums, or Onlinecavers.com, or on various Texas grotto
webpages or their Facebook
pages. If you really want to keep abreast of the latest news, you
will just have to go search for it yourself.
If a story ( like the current one in the news which hasn't been posted
yet ), falls on the border-line of that rule,
I will wait 24 hours before posting it, to give another caver a chance
to get the warm fuzzy feeling from hitting
the Send button, and enjoy the feedback they get from the positive
cavers and also the backlash from
the negative cavers, and the ridicule/humiliation from the TSP.
I will try my best to resist the urge to criticize other's post (
probably going to epic failure at that one ).
There is so much to talk about related to caving that is new. The
internet is saturated with new videos,
and new LED lights, and new things that help the environment ( which
may help caves directly or indirectly ),
and I feel people are either too scared to post something new, or they
are too busy, or some other reason
that they don't post something interesting to read. I like to be enlightened.
I am testing a new LED light I bought last week, but I am not going to
tell you anything about it. You will
either have to ask, or go to my sites I have mentioned before. I
will not report anything from the major
LED light forums, unless it is revolutionary.
If you wish to watch the latest caving videos on YouTube, just go to
YouTube, and type "cave and the month, year"
in the search box, and you will find new videos. To find the
foreign videos, which are often amazing, you will
have to be more persistent. I will try my best to only mention new
videos that are noteworthy.
I have said this several times before, but I try to make an effort to
write something that is new or interesting
when I post something. I feel CaveTex needs more interesting post.
The recent wave of post last week
made my Blackberry beep dozens of times, and some of the post could
have been handled differently,
or I just need to figure out how to make it not beep when a CaveTex
post arrives.
You can set Google News to search for words like: caving, cave,
speleo, stalagmite, bats, cave-diving, etc, and
it will notify you of new news stories. So I will not post
anything I find on Google News, unless it is something
that is noteworthy.
I hope that CaveTex improves and continues to provide new information to cavers.
I feel that if you went back and took a look at the thousands of
CaveTex postings over the years, that some creative person could
probably
single out 10 of being worth re-printing or organizing into some
readable article to put on the web somewhere. A majority of the old
post
would be obsolete for that purpose or not relevant anymore. That
person could probably be "nominated" for a speleo-historian award.

David - I for one appreciate your posts and encourage you to
continue. I realize its difficult not to take criticism personally,
however my observation is that those critical people generally have
nothing of value to say and so often ignore their own rules about
whats OK for cavetex that it provides my daily laugh.

I don't have time to read most posts, and I certainly don't have time (days
or weeks) to comb through the web trying to find everything that I want to
know about, however peripherally. That's why God invented David and several
other people who seem to spend their lives looking for things that the rest
of us can access. For instance, there is a Spanish caver that posts about
200 things a week on cave archeology and deep cave discoveries. Without him
(and David) I certainly wouldn't have a clue what's going on in the world. I
can't tell David what to do with his life, especially in the face of
constant and extreme criticism, or what the rest of this list wants to allow
to be posted, but I certainly vote for vociferousness (that's a word!) over
silence and ignorance. And that pertains to potential cave lights as well as
just caving news in general.

They pretty much have the same problem with hot tubbers as they do in
California: people wearing clothes in the hot tub. In fact, I notice that
Pete's hot tub has been getting more and more Californicated lately. We
need to do something to instill a little less modesty in people. What's with
all this conservatism--throwing away your rights to go naked?

The Bexar Cavers that the TSS does _not_ have, even as photocopies, are
Any issues of volume 1 (1971, called the Alamo Area Chapter
Newsletter) other than 3,4,5,8,9,10. That is, we're probably missing
1,2,6,7,11,12, assuming issues in fact came out every month. The
issues were not actually numbered in print. The issues we have are
numbered based on the month of the meeting announcement. The numbering
may be incorrect if some of the missing issues never existed.
Any issues of volume 2 (1972, also called the Amamo Area Chapter
Newsletter) other than 2,8,9,11,12. That is, missing are 1,3-7, and
10. The same note about numbering applies.
The only copy we have of Bexar Caver volume 6, number 6 (June 1976),
which was spirit duplicated ("purple Ditto"), spent some time wet and
is half illegible. A replacement would be nice.
We are missing volume 7 number 3 (March 1977), if it exists. It may
not, because number 2 ends with page 9 and number 4 starts with page 10.
Copies or scans of missing material can be sent to the TSS or directly
to me (Bill Mixon, 14045 North Green Hills Loop, Austin, Texas 78737).
My scanning that one particular old Texas newsletter is sort of a
demonstration project to encourage the TSS to do the same thing to
other old Texas caving club newsletters, rare and not so rare. I don't
expect to have time to do much more of that myself. I'm sure they'd
love other volunteers. You need a flat-bed scanner and, hopefully,
some image editing software to straighten and optimize the scans, as
well as some program to assemble the pages back into issues or
volumes. (Word can probably do that.) Considering the alternative,
which is not getting them scanned at all, I imagine you wouldn't be
under a lot of pressure to get it done in a hurry. Contact a TSS board
member, not me (although I do have that long write-up on how I do it).

All,
The big feed on Saturday would not have happened without the extreme generosity
of one person and the hard work of two others.
Please give a *big* thanks to Don Arburn for donating the beef!!!
And another to Vico Jones for butchering the steer, AND the pig (and cooking
it). Sorry to those who haven't seen the cow butchering video on facebook (or
not, it was graphic!).
Finally to Terry Holsinger who did the majority of the legwork in getting all
the food bits together. I hope you all saw the Pirate menu or read the
description cards of the dishes :-)
And of course please thank your cooks for slaving all day over hot burners and
cutting boards, and all the time before hand in putting it together...
Denise Prendergast and Jocie Hooper - coconut bars (Pieces of Eight)
Matt Zappitello (w/Crystal LeBoeuf) - Pineapple Upsidedown cake (Cabin Boy's
Delight)
Aimee Beveridge (w/?) - Cup cakes (Kraken Snacks)
Heather Tucek - Fruit Salad (Seadog Salad)
Leslie Bell - Green Salad (Jewel o' t' Eart' Salad)
Terry Holsinger (w/Sandi Calhoun) - Rice and Peas (Cat o' nine tails)
Terry Holsinger - Beans & Tomatos (Drawn and Quartered)
Galen Falgout** - Escoveech Fish (Shore Leave)
Terry Holsinger - Caribbean Style Chicken (Scurvy Island Chicken)
Vico Jones - Whole Roasted Pig (The Last Mutineer)
Aimee Beveridge - Spicy Punkin Curry (Parrot's Booty)
Umm - Caribbean Beef Stew (Scalawags Surprise)
Galen Falgout** (w/Heather Tucek) - Spinners (Rotten Doubloons)
(** Galen said to me a few weeks ago that he'd like to help, but didn't want to
do/own a whole dish. So he ended up doing two!! We appreciate that!)
And to their many helpers for
cutting/slicing/chopping/stirring/frying/turning/opening/etc.
And to ASS for serving it all (and pulling that together, it's more complicated
than you think!!), and for generally being awesome for doing a lot of final
prep and help for various dishes - Smoked beef and sausage slices, for instance.
Thanks y'all, and very much so from me.
