Shucks! And I had to miss the name tags I had suggested for years. They help
geezers know who folks are.

Congratulations and thanks to Allan Cobb and his host of unsung volunteers for
yet another great Texas Caver Reunion. You folks do a great job!

Special thanks this year to whomever followed though with providing name tags
at registration. Wonderful!

Soon after I started caving, I became interested in reading AMCS
newsletters. But it was
not easy for me to get my hands on an issue. I usually had to buy
one once a year at TCR,
in order to get the privilege to read it. But I was a college
student on a very tight budget. So,
it took me several years to get caught up on all the speleo-history of
the AMCS.

Today's new cavers don't realize how lucky they are.

Many issues are view-able online as PDF's, and can be saved on your
iPad, or e-Reader.

The one below mentions Richard M. Smith ( as a staff member of the newsletter )

     http://digital.lib.usf.edu:8080/fedora/get/usfldc:A30-00009/DOCUMENT_PDF

Here is another:

     http://www.cave-exploration.com/papers/Yaxchen-AMCS.pdf

It looks like quite a few of them are view-able from the KarstPortal site:

     http://www.karstportal.org/FileStorage/Assn_Mex_Cave/1975-v001-January.pdf

     http://www.karstportal.org/FileStorage/Assn_Mex_Cave/1975-v002-May.pdf

     http://www.karstportal.org/FileStorage/Assn_Mex_Cave/1977-v005-index.pdf

I look forward to the day, when I have a portable gadget where I can
easily manage
and retrieve all the cool caving information that has saturated the
internet. A creative caver
could sell a caver-modified iPad at the next NSS Convention that is
pre-loaded with
Speleo-Bloatware. That would be so awesome. How much extra would you pay
for an iPad 2, that had built-in apps just for cavers ? And how
would it be different from a
stock model ? ( e-mail me privately and I will share the comments
with others. )

And in the not too distant future, one will be able to read all 50+
years of The TEXAS CAVER on this site, as well.

A big thanks goes to George Veni for spearheading this effort.

I hope some pictures were taken of the tent memorial because I missed it
completely, and Rod was an old, old friend.

I agree, it was a nice memorial at TCR. Thanks to Paul and Katherine and

Just checking in to see if there is any new info as to services for Rod and to
thank whoever set up the memorial for him at TCR.
It was very thoughtful, beautiful, touching, and well done.
He would be most pleased.

Thanks,
Mark

I did take a couple, I'll update my Facebook album with that (and the Ediger picture that Ted Samsel asked for).

I'd like to say a BIG thanks to Pete for the hot tub and sauna.
I helped a little this year and realize just how much work it is to set up and
tear down the whole thing
And where the cooks have a base group with others coming and going over the
years, Pete does the whole thing year after year!

Again, Thanks Pete

Yeah, we all need to help Pete out each year or he may bail on his. He will not
ask for help, so it's up to us to both help and recruit others, especially
those young sea aggies with the strong backs.

I agree that we do need to help Pete, but don't despair, his son Colin told
me over the weekend that he has trained well and can take over once his
dad retires from providing the hot tub.

Y'all,

Just had a call from Dave asking me to post a big "Thank You" for those who
dropped by, drank, and generously tipped at his drinkin' establishment at the
weekend. For once he was close to breaking even.

I encourage those who have never been, to sample some of Dave's wares and enjoy
the company of those in-the-know who frequent, at the next caving event he's at!

Cheers,
Stefan

I have no complaints at all. Most Sea Aggies were at least half way in the
spirit of things, and give them time. We need the young or we do not persist
in any form.

I am not for or against but I just feel the changing environment around the hot
tub is a sign of a changing demographic of the "Texas Caver.". I noticed a few
years ago the "Aggie explosion" that began a changing of the guards if you
would. While the ASS represents a growing percentage of Texas cavers, they
also represent a group of cavers that are both casual and transient. I feel
the large influx has eroded some of the tradition that being a Texas Caver
represents. For the casual Caver they may never know what it's like to come
out of a cave soaking wet on new years day with your only care being to get out
of your wet muddy clothes and to get warm or to get to the one point in your
cave trip where you have to cross that near sump where it would be completely
pointless to get everything wet.

I think we should welcome every caver with open arms....well not the best words
but you understand. We all eventually cave to the greater culture which is
that of the Texas Caver!!!
