Today (August 9, 2014) marks 45 years since the discovery of what is still one of the most beautiful areas of Fort Stanton Cave - Lincoln Caverns, a half mile long borehole of velvet and aragonite speleothems that suddenly ended in a large breakdown. We knew then that there had to be much more big cave beyond, and although we still don't know what borehole lies beyond Engel Hill, the cave is still revealing many of its secrets to the next generation of cavers and scientists in other areas.

A final thought: As cave explorers continue to push the virgin passages, their lights produce the very first photons to land on the passage walls and formations since they were formed. A red velvet stalagmite was not red before the caver saw it - it had always been colorless until then. So, in that sense, cavers create what they find. Awesome!
