Good evening all,
As we move into the second half of 2013 I want to begin the process of looking
for candidates to run for theTreasurer of the Texas Speleological Association.
I have had conversations with a few cavers who have expressed mild interest in
the role but nothing really in depth. I've held the role for a few years and it
is time to allow someone else the opportunity to give back to the TSA.
Ae you interested? The role is not difficult and I will be happy to show any
one how the bookkeeping for the organization works. Is it time consuming? No,
not really, but it does require you to stay on top of the business else it
becomes a pain in the ass. Do you need a business background? No, but it would
help if you can add and subtract!
As a final thought - Are you a business student at one of the Universities
looking for something to add to your professional resume? This would be a
wonderful addition to your resume as you prepare to enter the cold, cruel world
upon graduation.

Here is a guy "cavern diving" without scuba gear for 16 minutes.
It seems like the biggest risk is that the air-pockets could have
bad air.

It is unique that he filmed himself doing this crazy stunt. He did a
great job filming himself.
Someone could write a good article on free-diving sumps, to explain the
safety precautions needed, along with examples of fatalities and why
they most likely drowned. I imagine most cavers find even duck-unders
intimidating when you have to hold your breath for just 2 seconds.
Rule # 1, is take a deep breath, beforehand. Right ?

NSS Members are cordially invited to attend the WVACS Pre-Convention
Camp at the WVACS Field Station in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.
Camp attendees will literally be surrounded by miles of world-class
caving! This Pre-Convention Camp is ideal for project cavers as well
as those simply wanting a classic WV trip, with a variety of led and
self-guided trips each day.
Tuesday, July 30th through Saturday, August 3rd, 2013, at Noon.
==>TRIPS
Daily caving trips will be led by WVACS members and friends, and will
be refined to campp attendees' abilities and interests. Trips will
range in intensity, vertical, and wetness. Self-led trips are also
possible. For more trip information, email Larry Fisher at

==>FEE
$35 per participant (sorry, no per-day rate). Limit of 50 participants.
==>FACILITIES
Two solid buildings with plenty of parking, full plumbing (bathrooms
with HOT showers), and electricity. No meals will be provided;
However, WVACS has two full kitchens complete with refrigerators.
Sleeping arrangements include a bunk room and lots of camping space
throughout the 6-acre property. Everything is available on a
first-come, first-served basis.

==>MODEST CAVES
Haynes: easy cave with saltpeter workings.
Higginbotham #1, #2, #3, and #4: Do four easy caves in one day!
Piercy?s Mill: Includes a room of 8-foot deep rimstone dams.
Pocahontas Poor Farm: Easy access with walking passages and a few squeezes.
==>MODERATE CAVES
Benedicts: Big, mostly horizontal cave with optional entrance drop.
Bone-Norman: Long lower stream passage, caves linked thru the
''Devil's Pinch'', easy access.
Buckeye Creek: Classic WV big stream passage, just over the hill from
the WVACS Field station.
Dry: A wet cave with (yet another) long stream passage and virgin
upper-level passage waiting to be surveyed.
==>LONG CAVES
Boar Hole-Portal: Three entrances into 11+ miles.
Culverson: A premier WV water cave, 20+ miles long.
Friars Hole: 40+ miles with many entrances and trip options.
The Hole: 20+ miles.
McClungs: 20+ miles, 2 entrances. Vertical entrance will be open.
Horizontal entrance might be.
Organ: Lipps entrance to 40+ miles with a commercial section.
==>VERTICAL CAVES
Carpenter-Swago: Thru-trip with two vertical entrances.
Lost World (aka Grapevine): 100? rappel into a commercial cave with walkout.
Maxwellton: 10+ miles with a number of short drops. Some of the main
stream passage needs to be surveyed.
McClungs: 20+ miles, 2 entrances. Vertical entrance will be open.
Horizontal one might be.
Roadside Pit: 70? pit in a roadside ditch with cave at the bottom.
==>PROJECT CAVES
Burntwood: Nice cave with great potential. Ongoing survey with plenty
of virgin leads. Dry: Open for surveys in virgin upper-level passage.
A wet cave with long stream passage and nice formations.
Maxwelton: Parts of the main stream passage awaits survey. 10+ miles
with a number of short drops.
Savannah: This cave will be featured in the July NSS News. Advanced
vertical skills are required.

Dear Friends,
The Weather Channel has a series called Secrets of the Earth. A few months ago,
on behalf of NCKRI, I assisted with a segment they titled Strangest Places and
which will at least partly feature Caverns of Sonora. Yesterday the producers
told me that it is scheduled to air on Thursday, 11 July at 8:30 p.m. EDT. It
will also air several other times, but any of the times may be changed at the
last moment if there are major weather events. Details and times are supposed
to be posted at http://www.weather.com/tv/programs/, although their on-line
schedule didn't work for me so I'll just check the on-screen schedule on my TV
that day.
The people making the video seemed like a good crew and asked a lot of great
questions, so I'm hoping this will be quality presentation on this world class
cave.
