Ah, Bill, this is indeed an accurate statement. The antibiotic compounds that we humans use that are produced by soil bacteria (e.g., streptomycin, from the Streptomyces bacterial species) are chemicals that are secreted by the bacteria when they are surrounded by different, competing bacterial species. In effect, the antibiotic-secreting bacteria are deploying chemical warfare against other bacterial species--a sort of bacterial resistance campaign.
