I have relocated the source of maps of the caves discussed in the new
"Underground in Arabia" book. They can be found in Saudi Geological
Survey reports available at www.saudicaves.com/spspubs [sic]. Warning--

This 2012 trip was a follow up to the two-day expedition Peter Sprouse
led July 3^rd and 4^th , 2011. On the 2011 trip we were tasked with
killing the last leads in the cave so the re-survey would be complete.
Andy Zenker and I failed at our task. On the second day of survey
Andy and I were in the lower level of the cave finishing leads along the
E-survey line and ended up creating two more than we could finish that
day. So, with Andy unable to join me, David Ochel, Jacqui Thomas and I
headed to the lower level of the cave. The trip started out well without
too much trouble opening the gate (no snakes!) or navigating to the
lower level. Sadly, I realized I forgot to pack the survey instruments
and David volunteered to run back to the truck for them while we sorted
out exactly where to start. We were surveying by 11:30am and I was
excited to see where the two leads at G34 would take us. It turns out
they would only give us 12.45 meters of survey. Oh well. I still think
the morphology of the lower cave to be interesting, hinting at some sort
of keyhole shaped passage that has been so filled with ceiling breakdown
that only the top rounded part of the passage is visible. Cool air
seems to faintly whiff up from the breakdown in the floor but the only
place that indicated a downward dig, that I have seen, was an impassable
crack in bedrock at the bottom of a breakdown floor funnel at G35. Very
curious�

Edelweiss is an old and reputable brand that I would trust. That's still
a below-market price, so they must be making it in the US and be
overstocked.
Highline, OTOH, is a one-man operation run by a known pot-head
with zero oversight, regulation, or quality-control. He has a vendetta
against PMI for dropping him, and sells his rope at or below cost just
to annoy them. His machine rightfully still belongs to PMI, but can't
be extradited. Use Highline at your own risk.

I don't imagine anybody else has bothered to read the recent West
Virginia bill to limit cave owners' liability on pages 22-24 of the
guidebook to the 2012 NSS convention. I'm no lawyer, but it looks to
me like it provides:
No liability to federal, state, county, or municipal agencies for
using caves in ways including recreation.
No liability to everybody else only for military, law-enforcement, or
homeland-security training.
Does this mean you should pretend your caving is training to defend
the country, or what?
It also looks very much to me like the final section of the act tells
insurance companies that they agree _not_ to cite this act as a
defence again liability claims, but maybe that just means that either
I or the West Virginia legislature is illiterate. -- Mixon

An informal come-and-go celebration of Patty Daw's life will be held between

room at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in Carlsbad, New
