Does anybody still remember the old TSA Activities Newsletter and what
a pain in the ass it
was to print and mail out ?

Check this out:

That took all of 10 seconds.

Yes I remember one of the best things that the TSA ever did to facilitate
cavers going caving... The *Texas Speleological Association Activities
Newsletter* (TSAANL).

How could I forget it. The most recent issue was always under a magnet on
the door of my 'fridge, and I'd see copies of it on the 'fridge door of most
all active cavers homes I visited. If it wasn't there then they probably had
it up on a bulletin board or other go-to place in there home. That's because
the TSAANL was the go-to source for all caving opportunities within a daze
drive of the center of the caving universe.

When I was editor of the TSAANL, I found it much more difficult to deal with
the speleo-politicians in the TSA (who eventually killed the TSAANL) than to
print, staple, stamp and mail the things.

And to think that in todays world a PDF could be e-mailed... cost could be
0.

I don't know what y'all do on facebook, because all I see is a login page.

All I do know is that facebook is not designed to let everyone see the same
thing. So it seems utterly worthless to expect a diverse group, such as
cavers are, to be forced into using such a twisted product in this way.

See this TED talk for more on that:

http://www.ted.com/talks/eli_pariser_beware_online_filter_bubbles.html

Warning: even us non-facebookers will likely find this information
distressing.

Cave Safe, Soft & Often,
   Justin

P.S.
Mark Alman is doing the BEST JOB -ANYONE- has done with the Texas Caver
since Gill gave it up over a decade ago. Kudos supreme to him.

I mention this because during the TSAANL's last leg of life it was in many
ways a supplement to the Texas Cavers' unreliable publication schedule. This
is NOT the TSAANL I pine for, but rather the Calendar section that was the
bulk of issues content throughout the 90's. Today the best source for
upcoming trips is the UT Grotto web page calendar section.
http://utgrotto.org/schedule.asp The TSA's calendar (no comment) is at
http://www.cavetexas.org/calendar/index.php

P.P.S
A question was asked a while back; Ask not what you could do for the TSA,
but what could the TSA do for you.

I meant to get a reply sent, and never did. Seeing as how I am now ranting
on one of my points of my reply to that question, I guess I'll finally get
around to answering that question in full and public. Coming Soon...

Blair Pittman Update

Mary and I visited Jean and Blair in Marathon on our way back to Denver.   He
is now there in her house and Jean is getting some good skilled nursing and PT
support.

The "get well" photo arranged at Brackettville was greatly appreciated.   Many
thanks to all who participated in that, especially Logan and Carl.

Blair has a long, complicated, road to recovery ahead of him, but he and Jean
seem in good spirits and are tackling the process head-on.

He presents as a stroke victim, with his own Blair-specific modifications.   He
bounced around in the roll-over and his brain really rattled around inside his
skull resulting in random internal damage.   In addition to a shattered C2
(external blow), there was basal bleeding associated with that trauma. He is in
a wheel chair, on oxygen and has to monitor his oxygen blood level, has
significant balance problems (which are slowly but steadily improving), and his
memory and cognitive abilities vacillate from good to poor (those are also
steadily improving).

Friends from Terlingua and the rest of the world have been visiting and giving
encouragement.   Jean is clearly thoroughly in love with Blair and working
extremely hard to provide him the needed support.   In turn, Jean needs our
support.   Her task is difficult and will not soon end.

Logan and others of the 70s Austin vintage certainly remember Enchanted Rocks

For those of you dead-set against Facebook please ignore this message.

There are numerous advantages to putting the TSAANL on Facebook.

In its first 24 hours of conception, 59 Texas cavers suddenly were
linked and communicating, in a way
that was not feasible until Zuckerberg came along.

In addition, there are functions off to the side that lets cavers chat
privately.

All the potential cavers in Texas, especially college kids and
high-school kids have a Facebook
app on their smart-phones. This is going to really become more
noticeable once they all get
their new phones and broadband-tablets this summer. It is almost as
revolutionary as when
the first phones were being installed in people's homes.

Now those 59 cavers, presuming they have a smartphone with a Facebook
app, have their caving
news at their fingertips, much faster than has previously been
available, and 24/7.

I can only presume there is a better way on Facebook to do this or
there will be someday. Someone
else is welcome to either tweak it, or offer a better solution that
does the same thing.

There are some disadvantages that could be addressed. At the
moment, I think anyone can
see the postings. But that can be fixed, but it makes it harder for
people to join. I don't think this
will have to be monitored like a listserve, but it is easy for people
to say something that gets
taken out of context, or is misspoke, or misunderstood, and gets someone upset.

Facebook may be a fad, but it seems to be a usable tool until
something better comes along.

I can see how Facebook is not for everyone, so anything newsworthy,
should be posted wherever it
would have been posted before Facebook came along.

Cavers are now reading the Facebook TSAANL on their smartphones before
they get out of bed in the mornings
and in their beds at night before they fall asleep.

The big event near Brenham is less than 44 hours away.

I was at the camp today walking around at 9 p.m. with no bug spray and
no shirt and
not a single bug bothered me.

The first 40 cavers to show up and pay to enter, get a FREE Led headlamp with 7
LED's.

I would like to point out that most of the cavers in Austin, live
closer to the camp than
I do. As do most of the cavers in Houston. I can only emphasize
that if you live within
2 hours of Brenham, you don't want to miss this event.

I plan to arrive at the camp on Friday at 8 p.m. with a large truck
loaded down with
tables, chairs, cooking equipment, extra camping gear, cots, food,
ice-chest, etc.
If you get there before me, it means I am behind schedule and having unexpected
things crop up. Just step over the gate and walk to the back of the camp
and pick out a campspot. I should have a blender going by 9 p.m.

It will be too hot for a tent. Just bring an inflatable mattress
and a cotton sheet
and something to block the rain. All the campspots have electricity
so you can
run a pump, a fan, or any gadget you like to take camping.

There will be midnight movies in the lodge, both Friday and Saturday.

There are at least 50 cavers that I was unable to reach, so please help me
spread the word.

While I am saying this event is FREE to many cavers, I am hoping that enough
people show up and donate money to help recoup some of my expenses.

Tentatively, there is going to be a large yard sale at the event, and a small
caving book sale. So bring some money for that if you can.

My best guess is that between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, there could
be 40 adults there, 15 being cavers, and the rest being guest of
cavers, along with
any kids they bring.

Camp Happy Hollow is a well kept secret. The address is 2029 Happy
Hollow Rd.
Brenham. That is about 1/2 way between the towns of Burton and
Brenham, and south
of Highway 290 by 2 miles. There are no landmarks in the area, but
the camp has a
large stone sign out front to the right of the gate. The gate is
just a swinging pipe.
There is a creek and small bridge you will pass before you get to the entrance.

The weather forecast is cloudy, humid. If it rains, it should not
last but a few minutes.

Unexpected things crop up? David, not you. A blender! I want my milkshake made
with Blue Belle Homemade Vanilla. I hope I'm one of the first 40 Saturday to
avail myself of a free headlamp. 7 LED's, WOW! I'm glad you are being frugal in
this endeavor. If I make it I will bring some ice.

David,

You are missing the forest for the trees. There already IS something
out there like you describe, and it works. It's called CaveTex. Look
at it this way, you have to have email to be on Facebook. If you have
email, and you are a caver, you SHOULD already be on CaveTex. So your
problem about people who are not on Facebook is solved! And let's face
it, in this modern information age, most of us have too many things we
are trying to keep track of already, so why create another? No point in
re-inventing the wheel. As for a paper copy, it does have a cost and is
not as timely. Like Justin, I, too, put in my stint as TSA-ANL editor.
The internet is much more responsive to last-minute announcements. And
yes, there are those who argue that some people don't want to be on
CaveTex any more because it isn't so much about caving sometimes,
instead degenerating to endless discussions about the east Texas cavers
picnic, Facebook, and your personal trials and tribulations. There is
an easy solution to that. Stop posting those things to CaveTex and just
post about caving. That way, more cavers want to be subscribed, and
your problem solves itself. To help accomplish that goal, I will now
turn this discussion to caving.

Yesterday I met with some TPWD officials at Colorado Bend State Park.
We have been working on a plan to re-gate Gorman Cave for a couple of
months now. This meeting was to do a final site inspection in the cave,
discuss some details about construction, and move forward on the actual
gating progress. You all may recall that Gorman Cave is one of the
largest maternity colonies for the cave myotis (Myotis velifer) in
Texas, and is also currently the only cave officially "closed" (by TPWD
Executive Order) in the face of the WNS threat in the entire state.
Part of the problem with Gorman Cave historically has been that the
current gate was built far into the cave and way past many of the
preferred bat roosts, and so does little to protect them. And even
though the cave is "closed" and heavily posted, occasional Park visitors
and neighbors from the private properties across the Colorado River from
the cave still sneak in. TPWD wants to better protect ALL the cave
resources, especially the bats, so we are building a new gate just
inside the cave where the two entrances meet. It will be a very
bat-friendly gate that we use on similar maternity colonies all across
the US, a special modification to the Basic Gate called a Window Gate.
It will be the first of its kind in Texas. We are planning to do the
majority of the work as the 8th National Cave Gating Workshop, where we
do the hands-on construction during the day and have informal lectures
in the evenings. We'll also need a lot of volunteers to help move work
on the trail, move steel and equipment, and set up for the actual
construction and workshop. Right now we are proposing that we start the
TSA Colorado Bend State Park Project one month earlier in the Fall,
starting in September this time, in order to pull together some manpower
to make this happen. Camping (tent as well as bunk space indoors) would
be at the Conference Center, and volunteers would be fed for the
weekend. This is still tentative at this point, awaiting final sign-off
for TPWD Headquarters, but I wanted to throw that out to everyone early
so that you can pencil it in on your calendars and hopefully plan to be
there and help out. As the summer progresses, I will post more updates
on both the gating workshop and also the weekend Project work.

Cave hard, and write about it often.

That takes no extra time, and insures that the wider audience of Texas cavers gets the message.

Agreed. One point no one has brought up yet is that some people (such as
myself) are blocked from using Facebook or other social networking sites on
their computer at work, but have access to email. It's very easy to follow
caving-related discussions throughout the day using cavetex, but
for Facebook, I'd either have to use my smartphone to log in, or check in at
night, which is realistically not going to happen.
