That is very good news, Roger. At the UTG meeting last night, a lot of concern
and caring was devoted to her.

The medical team is beginning the process of raising her body temperature as a prelude to waking her from her induced coma. That will take two
days, and be followed by the critical wake-up removal of the coma-inducing drugs. Everything is stable for now, and she looks good - even in
person. I know she wouldn't think so, but she looked just fine to me as I watched her breath smoothly and the monitors indicate steady
heartbeat and blood pressure and all. I left her room after telling Mallory that there was no way she was going to get out of being
responsible for lining up the speakers agenda for the next Texas Speleological Association Spring Convention, a job she has done for the last
three years.
It was also a great pleasure to see her brother Caleb Mayeux <https://www.facebook.com/caleb.mayeux> and meet Mal's mom Vickie, Mallory's
aunt, and an old friend from her college days. We shared Mallory stories, and I was able to tell Vickie of my own recovery in 2005 after 9
days in an induced coma. I assured her that Mal is much tougher than I, and that there is nothing to worry about, Things will be difficult in
the short term as Mallory will have to work hard to recovery her strength and I know she will be itching to drop pits again ASAP.

Yes, Ellie told me about the meeting. Mallory will know of the UTG concern soon.

Jim Kennedy has pointed out that there's a very nice book on the
spectacular quartzite caves of the tapuis at http://www.academia.edu/3462814/Venezuelan_tepui_-_their_caves_and_biota
.
It is 170 pages, heavily illustrated with color photos. Some sort of
sign-up or log-in is apparently required; it may be easier if you're a
Facebook person. I got my file (155 MB PDF) another way and could
provide a copy via Dropbox to anyone who can't or doesn't want to
manage the sign-up procedure. -- Mixon

Someone at a Sunday Swim at Strickland's wanted my recipe for banana cake.
It's downloadable from

the doc has a couple of other good recipes that are simple.

Subject: RE: Mallory updates (Thursday)
Good Stable day. Started warming her today. She was at 93.3 degrees when we
left at 9 p.m (up from 91.4 for the past three days). They have to go slow
because problems can occur if you go too fast, so they are going extra slow
with Mal. They are keeping her paralyzed because this works. They’re very
slowly easing her off the drugs they’re using to keep her stable. They only
drained her brain fluids once (just 7cc’s), and this was just so they
researchers could get a sample – not because her brain pressure (ICP) was too
high.
Mal’s friend Jamie Ducote drove in today from Avoyelles. He is her friend from
college that got her to go to Houston for the American Idol audition. He sings
great. Mal can’t. It has been 10 years since that event, and they were talking
about having a ten-year anniversary audition.
Three cavers came by today (Roger Moore, Lyndon, and Grayson) delivering gifts
of food, a card, and a get-well-soon bear signed by the Greater Houston Grotto
(Houston caving club). Yesterday, they brought a signed piggy bank.
I’m a good mom. I took Mal’s hamster out and let it run around Mal’s apartment
in its ball – but I used a paper towel to put it there.
Vickie

I am at Hermann Hospital now. I have a pulmonary function test @ 12:30. Since I
have never had one, I don't know how long it will last. I plan to go see Mal,
sign the Grotto bear and visit w/ her family when I am done with the test.
Given Kevin's message, I will probably be gone by the time y'all arrive.
Staggered visits are probably best anyway.
I am wearing my Longhorn Cavern bat shirt :)
I also brought my candle that is "cave" scented that I bought at the Kerrville
ICS. I really hope she is off the breathing tube and can have cave scented
aromatherapy! It sure helps me when I am at work and missing that awesome smell.
I will update y'all after my visit.
