Yes, I do remember Tom. He was good friend and a caver historian.

Someone recently sent out a request for cave jokes, but this is not a joke.

The Weazel just celebrated his 65th which was coincident with the ascension
of Pope Weazelicus LXV to the throne of St. Peter.

The rites lasted for four days and included not only the issuance of a
papal bull, but also the ravishing of the nuns, the burning of the witches, the
sacrifice of a naked goddess whose abdomen was ripped open by owls, and
the crushing defeat of the Man of Science by the Forces of Darkness. Needless
to say there were caves with nubile maidens. All of this has been
lavishly documented, though the identities of the nuns and police officers
have
been redacted.

The Weazel did not invite his many friends from either TAG or Texas, nor
did he submit the final report entitled Habemas Papam. This was not for lack
of love for his children but simply that this primitive list does not allow
the posting of material that might be considered questionable by those who
are not of the faith.

Therefore be it known that those who wish to be appraised of the secret
rites of the Holy See may submit their request to the Pope either on this
list or privately and their wish will be granted. Much but not all will be
revealed.

Pax vobiscum

Pope Weazelicus LXV

Bill,

>> I was lucky enough to have met him a few times....
>> Reminded me of a gentle giant...

Gentle until he offered to shake your hand. :-) What a grip!

Joel Tom Meador would often chug-a-lug a whole gallon of milk (his favorite beverage) at camp.

He was quite a historian, too, and spent many an hour researching cave history in courthouses and library archives.

He loved the Guads, pushing his 4wd vehicle to the limits (once overturned it when he hit a cow out on Hwy 137),
and was a delight to be around.

Mighty Tom was way too young when he left us.

Known to some of us as "Tommy Door", we'll always keep him in our thoughts.

I happen to have gone on a trip to the Guads, where Tom Meador (El Lechero) led Bill Deane and I into both Deep and Ogle Caves, two outstanding caves. it was back in the 70's, and I recall seeing him once more. It was a real pleasure having known him.

In 1967 or '68 there was a TSA Labor Day Project in Kimble County. I spent
most of that weekend caving with Tom and getting to appreciate his
enthusiasm for caving and his sense of humor. It was a cruel trick on us
all that he died so young with so much left to contribute.

I'd like to announce a spring clean up for Lost Oasis Cave on Saturday April
20th. I plan to remove the invasive species and overgrown stuff from the
property starting with the fenced in portion and moving out from there. I'd
need volunteers to bring chainsaws, loppers, bow rakes and gloves. I'll provide
refreshments and lunch. Afterwards, anyone who wants to go into the cave, can.
Message me for for more information.

This is a personal story, and totally irrelevant to anything.

I am working in Baytown, Texas this evening, Friday, but just finished.

I have other work, in Houston, much later tonight, and maybe tomorrow.

I could post-pone it all and head for the convention now, but it has been
my experience that procrastinating creates unexpected negative results in a
business enterprise. And, I am completely wiped-out from driving my
golf-cart-sized car all week.

I have missed a lot of TSA Spring Conventions, and during the 10 or so I
attended in the late 80's & 90's, I was not there long enough to join the
main activities.

I have fond memories of my first TSA Spring Convention, which I believe was
in 1985 at Inner Space Caverns. That may have been my first time to meet a
few of you. And there was one convention, back in the late 90's at the
Knox campground that I tried to constructively participate in.

So I am sitting here trying to reminisce, but the few memories are almost
erased.

On a more personal note,

I have been on the road, living in a run-down motel, Rodeway Inn, northwest
of downtown Houston, for 2 weeks, but today upgraded for a week at a Days
Inn. It is much nicer, but right on the very edge of a really noisy
T-intersection of 2 major interstate freeways under construction. I will
seldom be there, except to power-nap, as I really have been living like a
Gypsy in my car a lot the last 2 months. So somehow, I have to justify
the $328 weekly rate.

Work has been way too problematic this year. On one hand, I have more work
than I could ever do by myself, but on the otherhand, what good is it if
you are spending more money going to work than you bring home, or if you
can't enjoy the fruits of your labor ?

I could possibly show up late Saturday night to the convention, if there
was another Houston area caver, willing to come just for the night. But
the 8 hours on the road, could be put to more productive task, that would
make next week less stressful. And since I am always on the road, the
very last thing I want to do for leisure is be on the road in traffic. I
guess that may be why painters live in un-painted houses, and carpenters
live in shacks, and plumbers have houses with plumbing problems.

And one final thought,

The guy that owns CWAN must be really awesome to let the TSA have a
gathering. One would appreciate this more, if they knew how hard it is to
get land-owners to agree to do that. Try finding a land-owner east of
Austin willing to do that. I hope I have been able to open up Camp Happy
Hollow in Brenham to future caver gatherings, but only time will tell.

Safe caving,

David Locklear
