Whoa! Before sending me e-mails about the land near the caves, let me help
direct you to the right people. The reason I suggested this route to Linda was
that there have been a couple of grants from the NSS to deserving groups of
cavers (in IN and MO if I remember correctly) who got organized, and arranged a
purchase of cave property. There is a fund for this sort of thing, and as I
pointed out to Linda it would probably help considerably if there was actually
a cave on the property. But even lacking the cave, I am certain that all such
requests are considered on their own merits. The key to this was that the
cavers themselves did the legwork and raised the greater part of the funding
necessary to make the purchase. The NSS funds made it a little easier but were
not the "deal maker". Organizing this through the region would be a great idea,
outside of having a cave conservancy handy.

The people to contact are:

NSS President Wm Shrewsbury
[email protected]
Administrative Vice President Geary Schindel
 [email protected]

Cave and Karst Acquisition
Committee Chair Kim Metzgar
[email protected]

I would briefly explain the nature of what you want to do and ask what the
procedure is to get the ball rolling from the NSS side. Then get to work
contacting the owners agent and start feeling around for a land value and
likely price.

Good luck.

All,
RD Milhollan, running for the NSS BOG, and TX caver, says that likely
the NSS has funds available to help with purchase of cave lands, to the
tune of as much as $5,000. I'll forward his e-mail to all of you.  I think
this matter fits the criteria of land that will help SWR cavers with access
to caves.
