Well did you see the Yahoo news today where a 55 yr old lady hiking solo in
Utah jumped 4 ft and broke a leg. Took 'em 4 days to find her. She was a couple
of miles from her vehicle.

Nico is it hitting 100 deg. F down there, yet?

Also, he didn't really "die in a cave." He happened to jump into the ocean near
one.

Howdy Caver,

You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting on
Wednesday March 21, 2012 7:45 PM - 9:00 PM

University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall (156 West 24th Street,
Austin TX 78712) http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/buildings/pai.html

Vickie Siegel will present - Slovenia: A Holey Land for Cavers

Slovenia is home to the Kras region from which the term "karst" originated
and the small country has over 8500 documented caves. Vickie spent a
frozen week touring the crème de la crème of these caves with the local
hydrogeologists. Come see cool photos and hear her new "sketchiest
experience in a cave" story . Please join the inner sanctum of Austin
Texas Cavers and visit with friends of the extended caver community.

For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org

Officer contact, trip reports, event calendar, and new caver training links
to beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.

Before the meeting, take advantage of Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
happy hour specials. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com

The UT Grotto needs you, the caver with photos and a story to share about
your adventures, scientific research, or something else really cool. Contact
me.

Sincerely,

Gary Franklin

Ay carumba!

It's time, once again, for the Longhorn Caverns State Park Project, and
danged if it doesn't fall on Cinco de Mayo!

In celebration, I will be bringing a bunch of beef fajita meat and my
chef's hat. Barbara and Lyndon Tiu have volunteered to bring some bell
peppers, jalapeno and onions, a bag of cheese, salsa and some
tortillas.

Any other goodies and beverages you want to bring are most welcomed. I
will have plates, napkins, and utensils.

As far as the Longhorn Caverns SP Project goes, we will have a triple
pronged effort this weekend.

* We will re-visit work on the Lovers Lane area (bring
wheelbarrows, shovels, and buckets if you have 'em!). After the 6" rain
they received in March, much mud and silt was re-deposited on the
walkway and we will try to remove as much as possible.

* Christopher Francke and Leslie Bell will be leading a crew
digging in an upper parallel passage above the Lumbago Alley Drain. This
is a promising lead and there may be a downward trend connection to the
lower passage that may add more passageway to the existing cave.

* If we have enough help, access, and volunteers we discovered
last month that the Crownover Causeway has silted back in, somewhat, and
could stand to be dug out. I will have our patented dirt transport
system there to ease this job, if needed.

Overnight camping will be available Friday and Saturday night. Contact
me for access info and I would recommend mosquito repellant, as they
were quite bad last month.

The weekend will culminate Saturday with our Mexican feast, a beautiful
night of stargazing, and banter and repartee from atop the Observation
Tower at the park, before we head home Sunday.

Hope to see the old hands back at the project this month, as well as any
new faces interested in helping out.

This is a truly fun and enjoyable project and we try hard to keep it
that way and we guarantee a great weekend!

Come out to a spectacular and historic cave and park, friendly park
staff, and the always entertaining camaraderie of cavers!

Hope to see you this month!

Thanks!

Mark
