Hey, Cavers!
TCR is almost here! People will be at Flat Creek Thursday setting up (and
we can always use more help), and TCMA will be putting up the usual tables
for membership, the new *Passages*, and tshirt sales! We also have a
special offering that you will hear more about later.
There will be *NO Garage Sale* this year; we were needing lots of trucks to
take things that did not sell to Good Will or whatever. Save those gems for
the auction at Spring Conventionl.
Sunday we will have breakfast at 7:30 and our meeting will be at 9am. You
will be able to hear from the candidates running for TCMA Board at the
meeting. The election is by email or snail mail this year.
Start packing! It's going to be a great one.

Hey Old Man Wisdom! Does TCR start on Friday? I keep reading about
stuff on Thursday and am wondering when it is ok to arrive?
Curious,

Two northeastern cavers are visiting for TCR, Mike Warner from
Speleobooks and Thom Engle from the Northeast Cave Conservancy. They
will be arriving in Austin on Wednesday, and need bed space for that
night. They will be heading out to TCR on Thursday. Normally I have
crash space available, but Tone is also in town this week and staying at
my house. If anyone has a couple of empty beds to spare, please let me
know and I will pass your contact info along to Mike and Thom. They are
riding together, on their way here from the National Cave and Karst
Management Symposium in Utah.

Good morning, y'all!
I have had a good response for the wild caving trip at Longhorn Caverns
State Park, scheduled for 10 AM this coming Saturday. I suggest leaving
TCR at 9 AM.
I'll have room for one.
To recap:
Longhorn Caverns State Park is a mere ~30 miles away.
Prices are:
$17 plus tax per person, if you have your own gear. Regular rate is
$25.
$27 plus tax per person, if you have your own gear and would like a
collectible t-shirt to commemorate your trip.
If you need to use their equipment it's $10.00 extra. Includes helmet,
light, and knee and elbow pads.
The trip is approximately 2 hours in length and will involve areas of
the cave that most of us have never been in.
They have a very nice cafeteria at the park, where we'll do lunch, and a
way cool Gift Shop. We'll be back in plenty of time for cavorting, rest
and relaxation in the afternoon.
This trip is suitable for kids, as well, so bring 'em along!
There still is room for more folks to participate, but, ...
IMPORTANT! Everyone needs to call the office and go ahead and make their
reservation so the Park will know how many guides are needed. You will
need to pay for it at that time.
Please call Pam Plant at (512) 756-4680.
This trip and TCR will be a great time and we'll see you there!

ballots will be mailed out on Monday, October 18, one to each individual or
student membership and two to each family membership. Please promptly return
the card (postmarked by Wednesday, October 26) as I will do the final count
on Saturday, October 30. You will need to provide an envelope, stamp and
then mail to the TSA post office box provided on the ballot.
Remember that all candidates must be NSS members, so inquire if you have a
write-in vote. And please write or give me a call if you have questions. If
you know of a member who does not subscribe to “texascavers,” please pass

Subject: Sarma Cave became the second deepest cave in the world
Pavel Rud’ko of Krasnoyarsk (Rissia, Siberia) has reported the
success of the recent expedition of Krasnoyarsk cavers to the Sarma
Cave, Arabika Massif, Western Caucasus. The cave, previously explored
by cavers from Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk to -1570 m, has now been made
almost 200 m deeper, to reach depth of -1760m and become the second
deepest cave in the world.
The expedition led by Pavel Rud’ko has been carried out between
September 1st – October 7th, 2011. The main branch has been pushed
to -1760 m after breaking through a narrow meander at the old bottom.
Many side and ascending passages in other parts of the cave have been
also explored. The expedition performed systematic temperature
measurements, and speleobiological and microbiological sampling.
With its new depth figure, Sarma surpassed the
Illjuzia-Mezhonnogo-Snezhnaya system (-1753 m), located in the nearby
Bzybsky Massif, and became the second deepest cave in the world,
following Krubera Cave (-2191 m) located in the same massif. Thus, the
western Caucasus now hosts three deepest caves in the worlds, two of
them in Arabika Massif and one in Bzybsky Massif.
Some details of geology, hydrogeology and cave locations of Arabika
can be found at

Howdy!
We could use some volunteers to help cook, serve, and clean-up for the TCMA
breakfast on Sunday morning at TCR. Who wants to help?!?!
Thanks!

idiosyncrassies of the TCR caver-catered feed Saturday night at the
coming Texas Caver Reunion: You will be expected to bring your own

Thanks for posting that Bill, it would be a shame if people didn't have
anything to eat out of/with on Saturday!
A few other things I'd like to bring up...
1) The cooks will need help on Saturday preparing their dishes; please come by
and help by chopping and stirring, it'll be much appreciated!!
2) We will also need help serving the food, there are special privileges for
those who do. If you'd like to help please come and find me on Saturday and
sign-up (probably need at *least* 10 people). If you're helping then you'll
need to be available at ** 5pm **.
3) Stay cool by standing in the shade and washing up - now Rod Goke has gone
(RIP) we have a big hole to fill :-(
4) We'll be posting a menu on Cavetex (we hope), and certainly on the day, with
ingredients so you can decide if you can eat a dish or not. We have taken
account of common allergies; if you're uncommon then volunteer to cook next
year :-)
5) The theme is Pirate/Caribbean, come prepared!
Cheers,
Stefan
