Hi all,
I hope everyone has reserved the first weekend of December (12/3-4) on
their calendar for the Southwestern Region Winter Tech to be held in Las
Cruces. Carol has published a call for papers in the last edition of the SW
Cavers, but I'm going to reiterate that call now. I'm interested in any papers
dealing with exploration, mapping, digs, restoration, bat studies, or anything
else dealing with caves here in the southwest. (I'll even take a slide show of
caving somewhere else!) We already have some submissions, but we need more.
I'm going to allow 20 minutes per paper, a few minutes transition, and limit
the total number of papers to around 12-14. So let me know if you haven't
already. I'll need an abstract that can be published in the SW Caver.
The venue for the meeting and presentations on Saturday will the the
Gerald Thomas Auditorium at NMSU. (I'll send a map later.) We will have
coffee and other breakfast items available at the auditorium. (We are hoping
to have breakfast burritos!) After the meeting, we will gather at a local
all-you-can-eat restaurant for dinner. (We have 3 candidates and we haven't
chosen which one yet.) The after dinner party will be at our house (3125
Missouri Ave., Las Cruces, NM) We should have our hot tub available, and
refreshments as well.
Here's a list of Las Cruces cavers offering crash space (all have
requested no pets):
Gary & Emily Grogg (room for two couples), 5813 Desert Mesa Place,
317-695-6393, [email protected] or [email protected]
Steve & Kathy Peerman (we're pretty much booked up!), 3125 Missouri
Ave., 575-521-8630, [email protected] or [email protected]
Grady Viramontes (room for a few couples), 660 San Ysidro Rd.,
575-650-6062, [email protected]
Wayne & Kathy Walker (some room in their RV), 1712 Regal Ridge,
575-522-0163, [email protected]
Rob Wood (one bedroom plus floor), 3427 Chimney Rock Rd., 575-635-0803,
[email protected] (Rob has no animals at his house, for people with allergies.)
Allen Wright (one bedroom) 528 N. Melendres, 575-496-6705,
[email protected]
On Sunday, for those who may be interested, we're offering a trip to
Geronimo's Cave. This requires crossing the Rio Grande and a one mile hike up
to the cave in the Robledo Mountains just north of Las Cruces. The views from
the cave entrance are pretty good.
See y'all in December!
Steve Peerman
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you
didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from
the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
attributed to Mark Twain, but no record exists of his having written this.
