Rod,

After you were abducted how long did it take for them to bring you back?

Oh no! See what you've done now, Andy! You have us all curious to read your
chupacabra story. Keep this up, and I might have to retaliate with my somewhat
cave related UFO sighting story, and it's not even a hoax.

You dues paid TSA members, I hope you have downloaded the new issue of the
Texas Caver. My article about Spring Creek Cave has the last three words
omitted. They are:

good on it.

So, on page 14, the last sentence of my article should read:

We were there briefly, and it is fleeting these days to keep a cave in the
list of the ten longest caves in Texas, but I made a vow to the landowner,
and I think in the end I will make GOOD ON IT.

A book review: Tracking the Chupacabra: The Vampire Beast in Fact, Fiction, and
Folklore .   By Benjamin Radford, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque.

The legend was started in Puerto Rico (where there is a long history of vampire
belief) by a woman named Madelyne Tolentino.   As the Chupacabra   legend
spread to Mexico and northward into the United States the beast changed from
a bipedal being with spikes down its back to a quadruped, something along the
lines of a dog, wolf, or coyote.

Radford tracked down and interviewed Tolentino, after which everything falls
into place.

Reviewer Matt Crowley sums it up:   "Though modestly titled, this book is
arguably the greatest cryptozoological book ever written."

BBC has an article on how technology is helping save wildlife and part of it
is about a bat phone to track bats in an area.

Just returned from a week of diving in Cozumel and Tulum. Spent a few days
in Cozumel enjoying palancar reefs with my daughter and then we all went to
Tulum to finish the trip off with some cenotes.

On Coz we did a couple dives in Aerolito (underwater cave system), checked
out the sulfer falls and dead zone areas. Enjoyed a dive with German
<http://www.germanyanez.com/>and then left for the mainland.

Stayed at Robbies (Xibalba dive center <http://www.xibalbadivecenter.com/>)
in Tulum. Xibalba is a great place to say, the rooms are very nice and
relaxing at the end of the day in the pool was welcome after fighting off
the mosquitoes at some of the cenotes.

We revisited some of our favorite places, Grand Cenote, Car Wash, Dos Ojos
and dove Mayan Blue and Temple of Doom for the first time. The mosquitoes at
Mayan Blue are not to be underestimated...we ended up driving to the main
road after the dive still in our wetsuits, masks and hoods while Cora
continued to kill them off in the car...no amount of bug killer would
suffice...you must be covered up...however the cave was beautiful and worth
the bumps.

Car Wash (Aktun ha)

Temple of Doom (posted at Cenote Cala Vera on road)

My daughter really enjoyed the cenote tours with Richie from Xibalba; we all
dove Angelita and it was basically just like the pictures...now she's
talking about wanting to take a cavern course.

We only took a couple videos as we were mostly diving new systems and
passages and have a policy that we only video tape after diving the exact
route at least three times.
Here's a short video of the River Run line in Dos Ojos...i know i know, the
camera is 11 years old and we don't have the correct lights...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4WFsXmkLrk

Also proposed to Cora in the Grand Cenote right about where we took this
picture. Now planning a wedding for next year, seriously considering doing
it underwater and in a cave as that will be reduce the guest list and our
expenses considerably.

Tulum Tips
On the way down to Tulum from Playa stop at the ty-coz vendor at the first
gas station on the right. The economic sandwich is 15 pesos...and worth
every bit.

Be sure to check the gas pump BEFORE you get a fill, no matter how you argue
with the attendant that 30 liters is NOT a half a tank, ask him to call the
police or demand to see his manager you will end up still giving $10 extra
unless you ensure the pump is zeroed out BEFORE filling anything.

Posted on behalf of Cheryl Jones:

I hope you were able to watch the Friday's subcommittee hearing
on WNS, or the video. NSS WNS liaison Peter Youngbaer did an
**outstanding** job speaking for the NSS and cavers, and based on
their questions, the subcommittee members seemed to really take
notice of what he had to say. We couldn't have asked for better
representation.

Webmaster Alex has created a Web page for the hearing, including
photos and links to the video and testimonies.
http://caves.org/WNS/Hearing%20on%20Why%20Should%20We
%20Care%20About%20Bats.htm (On the main WNS page the link
is included in the section "Education and Outreach" towards the
bottom of the page. "Congressional Hearing: "Why Should We
Care About Bats?" - June 24, 2011.")

The written testimonies were provided to the subcommittee
members in advance, and each person on the panel had only 5
minutes to present a synopsis. Peter provided copies of the 2011
Conservation issue of the "NSS News" containing the WNS reports
to the Natural Resources Committee's office to distribute to
members, and had additional copies available for the audience as
well. He held up a copy at one point during his statement as a
reference for data and more information.

I hope everyone will take the time to watch the video of the hearing,
and read Peter's and the other testimonies.

Spread the word to your grotto and caving buddies.

Cheryl
