Howdy Caver,
You are cordially invited to attend the Underground Texas Grotto meeting
which will be the first official meeting of 2011. Turn off the television
and get away from the house by spending your evening with some Austin
cavers.
Underground Texas Grotto meeting - January 05, 2011
The meeting is on Wednesday from 7:45 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
University of Texas Campus in 2.48 Painter Hall
NOTE: THE ROOM NUMBER CHANGE to 2.48 PAI

Peter Sprouse will present – Quintana Roo Caving - Endless caves in
Margaritaville
Peter traveled to the Yucatan in Mexico last November with a few cavers to
explore some of the extensive air-filled caves by the coast near the Akumal
Ecological Center. A few of the local cavers joined the crew to map 3500
meters of watery air filled passage during the day to spend the evenings
snorkeling the reef. There were even ruins close enough for some touristing
as well. Come check out what some of the Austin cavers have been doing.
For information on Underground Texas Grotto activities, please see
www.utgrotto.org All of our information including officer contact info,
trips reports, new caver training, event calendar, and posting links to
beginner trips or vertical rope training are available.
Before the meetings, we sometimes meet at Sao Paulo www.saopaulos.net for
a happy hour special. This area is the best place to park and meet folks
walking over to the meeting. Then after the official meeting, we continue
with the decades long tradition to reconvene for burgers, beer, and tall
tales of caving at Posse East. www.posse-east.com
The UT Grotto needs you, the caver with photos and a story to share about
your adventures, scientific research, or something else really cool. Contact
Gary
Sincerely,
Gary Franklin

Has anyone experienced "problems" with the wire connector plugs on Stenlights?
My Sten light seems to be having some "issues".

We have had a few problems with those connectors, although
the more common problem is for the wire to break or short right where
it enters either the battery or the head piece. I had a pin fall out
of a connector once, and another time the pins and/or holes became
either corroded or too muddy. Cleaning fixed the problem in the
latter case. If either the wire or connector has actually failed,
Sten will usually repair it for free. (Write first to get return
authorization.)

John,
I've sent back two lights three times. The problem was leaky battery pack
(2x) and a bad LED. After an error during repair (they forgot to replace an
o-ring), they sent me a prototype "waterproof" battery pack. They recommend
greasing the connections but I have also heard that they have some fancy
gold-plated connectors that you might be able to beg out of them. Great lights
and great customer service.

Some of you might find this interesting. It's a National Geographic article
about Hang Son Doong, or “mountain river cave,” which is a cave in Vietnam with
exceptionally large passages:
