Big Bend-Mexico Crossings

There has been a bit more publicity in the press about the "opening of the
(Class B) Border Crossing at Boquillas". Doesn't   say much more in the way of
specifics than has been speculated on in this forum before.

Alpine Avalanche January 13, 2011 reports this as US Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) Commissioner Alan Bersin set up a podium on the US side of the
Boquillas crossing and said Great Words.

The Avalanche Publisher (John Dilmore) states:   "Work is slated to begin in
July with the first public crossing to take place in April 2010."

Whatever exactly "public crossing" means.   Who knows, but I still don't
envision a truck full of Texas Cavers sloshing North from the Sierra del
Carmine being met with open arms.   Let me know what you find out.

January 28 Texas Tribune (A January 3 press release before his visit)

FYI - Class B port of entry

Class B ports of entry are ports designated for foreign national's who at the
time of applying for admission are permanent residents in possession of a
foreign national registration receipt card (Form I-151 or I-551; 'Green Card'),
a valid nonresident foreign national border crossing card, or who are
admissible without documents under documentary waiver provisions

The Class B thing is interesting. I would say that I couldn't imagine
that if I showed up on the Texas side with my passport after crossing
the river by caving vehicle (or rowboat) that they'd turn me back but,
then, maybe I could.

Sounds to me that it would be worth a try!!  AFTER April 2012.

From today's NYT (sorry for any typos). -- Mixon

An American missionary couple was ambushed by gunmen on a highway in Mexico about 70 miles from the border on Wednesday, and the woman was fatally wounded, according to police in Pharr, Texas. The gunmen opened fire when Samuel L. Davis refused to stop his pickup truck at an illegal roadblock near the town of San Fernando. . . .

The story I saw said this was a new, big, loaded, Macho pickup which the bad
guys covet.  Not a beat-up old caver truck.

There are a lot of big, loaded, Macho vehicles being driven by cavers
of late. I think the days of beat-up old caver trucks are either way
back in the past or are about to experience a renaissance.

It's available from the NSS A/V Library, Roger -- V953 -- and will soon be available on DVD.  But as you saw on Jill's site, that's just one episode of the 4-part series, "Water's Journey."  The other three don't involve caves, and I haven't seen them, but would like to.
