The first convertible hardtop that I know of was a 1957 or 58 Ford Fairlane 
500. They are highly collectible today.

         Hey, there have been hard-top convertibles for decades.  My 
aunt had one when I was a kid.  Recently they've made a comeback due 
to increased safety and ruggedness.  Apparently there are even 
hard-top convertible trucks and SUVs, although I've never seen 
one.  Check out
