I'm with Sid and the NSS on this one. Most caves are in isolated areas where,
should an accident or stranding occur, no bystanders would be near to lend
assistance. Usually two or more heads and/or hands are better than one in a
situation.
Besides, fellowship and camaraderie are a big if not the best part of caving. A
buddy would be able to back up your story
(or lie). Another thing, look what caving alone did to David. :)

i'll admit that there are a few caves that are safer than driving on freeways,
and i'll admit most cavers are in good health/physical condition - but that is
one of the nss mandates, and i'm sure you'll admit that by not caving alone,
most of the survivors in American Caving Accidents fared a lot better than if
they had been alone. i think that cavers should keep in mind that any bad press
about caving, such as accidents, can have a negative impact on all cavers'
freedom to cave. i also think all cavers should read the aforementioned
publication as there is much to be learned from it.

Sid
Just what's wrong with caving alone? With the exception of Floyd Collins'
entrapment in 1925 (he wouldn't have died if the local coal miners had gone to
work promptly to free him) I challenge you to point to even one single modern
fatality that has occurred because a person was caving alone. Houston caver
David Locklear used to celebrate his birthday all by himself way back in
Airman's cave and he is still with us.

Solo caving is a remarkable expression of human self confidence, ability, and
presence of mind. It should not be disparaged.

awesome. hurrah for justin. this is a great idea. i do hope he also stresses the

importance of not caving alone, making sure others know where you will be and
when to call for help, etc.
