This jibberjabber about what gadget you might buy to do what at some far-flung 
location kindof got me thinking...
The Iphone has a magnetic compass sensing as well as 6 axis accelerometers, 
right?
This would make it a decent inertial platform to record survey data - replacing 
Sunto and notepad.
All you'd need to add is tape or a laser rangefinder.  (And maybe stronger than 
typical structural integrity insurance.)
