I am not sure how a few folks on the list serve dissuade you from
going caving with other Texas cavers. Most are good folks (baring on
all). The key is to get to meet cavers in person at Grotto
meeting/other caving events. Most grottos have novice trips every few
months depending on where you are located.

I am in Lampasas and am having a lil culture shock since I moved from
Chicago. I grew up in San Antonio so this is home and I know I'm in a perfect
area to start this sport/hobby and cant wait to meet all u nice good

There are several hundred cavers in Texas, and if you're going to let
the comments of 2 or 3 turn you away from caving then perhaps your skin
is too thin for this sport. I'm not trying to offend you I'm only
making a point that the opinions or comments on Texascavers have nothing
to do with what you'll experience on caving trips. If you limit your
caving experiences to only your family and friends then you won't be
learning from some of the best and most experienced cavers in the world.
And you will miss out on some of the most enjoyable aspects of caving
which is traveling with a bunch of total strangers, camping, camp fire
stories, surveying, conventions. Not to mention that if you only cave
with your friends and family you'll miss out on the best caves which are
generally only accessible through other cavers.
We want and need Minnows such as yourself. There are far too many old
timers and not enough new cavers to take up the new and or existing
caving projects. Attend your local grotto meetings, and invite yourself
(and your friends) on announced trips. It won't be long and you'll have
more caving opportunities than you can handle, plus a new family of
caver friends.

Minnow,
I know I've had some stuff said about me, but I can tell you right now that I
won't stop caving with any of these people. I mean only one of the messages
even slightly offended me and i really think it was probably meant more as a
joke.
As for learning the best way to do that is to go caving with these people. I
don't know a single caver who isn't willing to pass on knowledge. I've only
been caving now for 4 maybe 5 years now and have learned more than I can tell
you, but I only learn about recent news and trips on here. Most of what i learn
I learn by descending underground with some of the very same people I've been
debating with on here.
I mean we did it off list, but Andy(who I don't think I've ever met in person)
and I debated for a while until, literally, we both just agreed to disagree. We
found our points that we could agree on. Like it's not smart to cave the entire
time with a gun (though he felt it shouldn't have even made it to a cave) and
that it's bad form to just shoot animals for being in the way. Without this
discussion though we might not have seen how each other felt about the subject
and so now I know who would be made uncomfortable by the presence of a gun.
That's important so I don't make them uncomfortable.
This all said, Guns are like politics and religion, when debated things will
get heated. Come to Colorado Bend or one of the other open trips and you'll
see most people just have a great time.

To funny Nico I'm 5 foot 100 lbs so when I say I'm from Texas they have
always said I thought everything was big in Texas. I said I have a big
personality lol. So I'm the right size and love to get dirty and just moved
from
Chicago so know how to dress for cold. I own probably the biggest collection
of long underwear. But I want to be that person that crawls in the small
places and lets everyone know its ok and worth it. I just cant wait. I went
to our river and found some fossils the 1st time have a metal detector, a
couple boogie boards so at 41 I'm starting the life I always wanted. I want

Thanks for the directions. I own Lights, Boots, Cave Pack, a wet suit I
don't think will work its a surfing wet suit not full suit so would freeze I
think. Am getting knee pads i need them for the metal detecting too. I have
been looking for everything else but am running out of money with the move
moms cremation and not having a job yet so am trying to get it all. But I

Right you are, Mark. The book's about Stone at Cheve and Klimchouck at
Krubera/Voronja.
And I questioned the author, James Tabor, about the title. He said that Random
House, the publisher, picked it and wants to use it. I told him that not only
has it already been used as a title for Nevada Barr's book, but cavers are never
really blind, and that we have good lights. We're not blind when we drive at
night,

Chicago. Was there taking care of my parents and mom my bestfriend in the
world died. I moved back here cause San Antonio was home. My friend from
7th grade had a house to rent so we moved to Lampasas and I am having culture

Oprah, but we do have fried Okra. Nor will you find world class Pizza Pies,
but there are plenty of Cow Pies. We don't have an "L", but if you turn left
on FM 580 from US281 you'll be heading to Colorodo Bend State Park and have
